'If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it': Paris Hilton says she INVENTED the selfie - and started all of today's hottest trends - as she poses in her portrait-filled home for W

  • Paris, 36, took W Magazine inside her home, which is filled with photos, paintings, and even cardboard cutouts of her
  • She noted that a lot of the trends on the runways are things she used to wear in the early-to-mid-'00s
  • Paris also pointed out, correctly, that she was one of the first reality stars, but had only nice things to say about current reality star Kim Kardashian
  • The socialite also appears in a funny video in which she rehashes her favorite '00s-era trends and shows off her extensive bedazzled cell phone collection

As Paris Hilton would tell it, she's always been way ahead of her time.

The 36-year-old socialite-turned-reality-star-turned-entrepreneur was a celebrity for being a celebrity before it was cool — and, as she says in a new interview with W Magazine, she's really the front-runner that inspired all the celebrity fashion trends of today.

Besides truly being one of the first reality stars — the Simple Life did, in fact, pave the way for shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the Real Housewives franchise — Paris also claims responsibility for the selfie, social media stars, and even many of 2017's biggest fashion trends.

Look at me! Paris Hilton filmed a new video for W Magazine inside her home
Her house includes several portraits of her and, according to the writer, a cardboard cut-out

'If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it,' she said, agreeing with the W interviewer's observation that she invented the photo technique — or, at the very least, popularized it.

'I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera,' she added.

Certainly, there is plenty of evidence of Paris taking pictures of herself with early digital cameras and flip phones, though some might argue that many people were doing that at the time.

Touching on the subject of fashion, Paris also noted that she was wearing all of today's hot trends back in the early-to-mid 2000s.

You're welcome! Paris agreed that she was one of the first people to take selfies in an interview with W Magazine in May. She is pictured with Stavros Niarchos in 2006
Say cheese: She said she was taking them with flip phones and disposable cameras, and would have taken them with beepers if they'd had that cabaility

'To now see things on the runway, and to see girls wearing things that I used to wear is really cool because nobody really dressed like me back in the day,' she said. ''Young people now see what people wore before and want to bring it back.'

Undoubtedly, some critics will say that Paris sounds like she is tooting her own horn.

However, her claim may not be so far-fetched — she did wear several of today's trends over a decade ago, though her insistence that she was the only one is dubious.

Inspired: According to Paris, she also started several of today's trends; certainly Kendall Jenner seemed to have gotten inspiration from a 2002 dress Paris wore
Such a girly girl: Paris has always been known for wearing lots of rhinestones, tiaras, and the color pink

As W points out, Gucci has been showing graphic tees — an old Paris favorite — on the runway. Saint Laurent has tiaras and rhinestones — another Hilton standby — and Paco Rabanne showed chainmail dresses.

Vetements also recently debuted a Juicy Couture collaboration, and Paris was certainly one of the most frequent wearers of the brand's tracksuits.

She also often carried tiny bags, wore chokers, and sported other accessories that are making a comeback.

While Paris' contribution to the trends of today is not comfirmable, it is definitely not outlandish to say that she 'started a whole new genre of celebrity', as she, her sister Nikki, and her frenemy Nicole Richie were the first of their kind

No bad blood: Though she and Kim Kardashian (pictured in 2007) feuded for years, she said she was proud of her and her whole family
Frenemies: Paris did, though, note that she was one of the first reality stars, and she is glad she did it back when it was fun and unscripted

She is, however, glad she got in at the ground floor with reality TV.

'Nowadays, everything is just so scripted and fake,' she said. 'Everything is planned out. There's nothing real, really. I'm glad that I did it in the beginning when it was organic and fun.'

This could be a slight dig at the Kardashians, who infamously reshoot scenes for their reality show — but Paris won't outright dis the famous family, despite only recently resolving a longtime feud with one-time employee Kim.

'I've known the family my whole life,' she said. 'They are all intelligent, beautiful business women and I'm proud of them and the brand they've built.'

Recap: In a video for W, she goes over some of the big trends of the '00s that are back, like tracksuits - but she notes that you should never look like you're going to the gym in one
YOLO! She also says miniskirts should be the size of a belt

Paris also showed off her famous sense of humor in a video for W, which takes viewers inside her very Paris-centric home.

W's writer, who was given the grand tour, descirbes a 'Princess Paris' placard outside the front door, as well as several pictures and paintings of her throughtout the home. There is also a cardboard cut-out of Paris, and even framed mirror selfies.

The two-minute clip offers viewers a peek, too, as Paris rehashes her favorite trends from the '00s — several of which are back.

She shouts out to track suits ('Always wear ones that are colorful, or else you'll like you're actually going to the gym. Ew.'), graphic tees, tiaras, rhinestones, and super-short skits ('Skirts should be the size of a belt. Life's short. Take risks.').

She also stresses the importance of having multiple phones, saying, 'You should have at least three phones, and they should all be bedazzled.

According to W, Paris actually has five iPhones now — but her full collection of old phones is much more extensive.

She seems to have hung onto all of the cell phones she's ever used, and even shows them off in the video: Two T-Mobile phones, a Razr flip phone with rhinestones in a cheetah pattern, three bedazzled Blackberrys, and two more cells.
