Boulder County adults who are 80 and older are expected to be the fastest-growing age group in the county between now and 2050, according to the “Aging Well in Boulder County: Data Report” released recently by the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging.

Fewer than 11,000 people who are 80 and older currently live in the county, but the number is expected to rise to nearly 35,000 by 2050, the report says.

With the expected rapid rise in older people, the report is aimed at guiding community discussions, planning initiatives and advocacy efforts to foster a more age-friendly community. The report calls for people to think about three priority areas related to growing older: caregivers; housing; and transportation.

Boulder County demographic patterns are similar to those nationwide in that people are living longer because of advances in medical care, the report says.
