Editor’s note: This story has been updated to report that the music series kicked off on June 22.

Roots Music Project, a Boulder-based nonprofit group for local musicians, kicked off a series of concerts called On the Rise Concert Series on University Hill as part of the city’s plan to boost community efforts in the area.

The first concert was held last weekend and featured local musicians from School of Rock, singer-songwriter Emelise, Mr. Knobs and the Wrenn Van Band.

The second and third shows, also at Hill Events Street, 1221 Pennsylvania Ave, are slated for 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, Aug. 24. The July lineup features area musicians Jack Brown Band, Bear Hat, Float Like A Buffalo and Lit Society.

There will be a fourth concert from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Depot Square Plaza. All events are free and feature local musicians.

The city’s Community Vitality Department conceptualized the concert series as a way to help revitalize The Hill. It is one of the tools that city workers say will help strengthen the connection between people and businesses in The Hill neighborhood and others in downtown Boulder.
