Boulder-area events for Wednesday, June 19: Roots Music Project celebrates Juneteenth with six powerful performances

Juneteenth celebration at Roots Music Project: 6:30-10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Roots Music Project, 4747 Pearl St., Suite V3A, Boulder. Celebrate freedom and unity at this Juneteenth concert, a free show that will feature an uplifting evening of soulful music and powerful performances from Rex Peoples and Xfactr, Jack Hadley, Wellington Bullings, Kid Astronaut, Zivanai Masango and Blessing Chimanga; rootsmusicproject.org.

Boulder Comedy Festival: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Junkyard Social, 2525 Frontier Ave., Suite A, Boulder. Boulder Comedy Festival brings together incredible comedians and all the beauty and adventure that the Boulder area has to offer, creating an experience not to be missed. The Festival brings focus to and highlights women and diversity in comedy. Nationally touring comics featured on Comedy Central, Netflix and Amazon come together with festival winners and local comedians to create a sea of hilarity in Boulder and the surrounding areas. $25, bouldercomedyfestival.com.

Summertime matinees at Fiske Planetarium: 12:30 p.m. Fiske Planetarium, 2414 Regent Drive, Boulder. The planetarium will host a matinee series Wednesdays and Thursdays this summer. The family-friendly, full-dome planetarium films will enchant and entertain kids of all ages. $10, colorado.edu/fiske.

Juneteenth celebration on the rooftop: 5 p.m. Thursday, Museum of Boulder, 2205 Broadway, Boulder. Celebrate the beauty of Black resilience, community and the expression of liberation for QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Color) futures with Out Boulder County. Light refreshments are included with the ticket price. The evening will feature dance, speakers, drag performers, spoken word artists, live music and more. This is a substance-free event that’s youth-friendly, QTPOC-centered and ally-welcoming. $10, museumofboulder.org.

Creat Pride banners: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder. Teens and their caregiver can join in the fun of making Pride banners that you can use to decorate your space. Free, boulderlibrary.org.

Moovers and Shakers Cocktail Competition: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut St., Boulder. This event celebrates the art of the cocktail with a popular competition featuring mixologists from some of Boulder’s top restaurants who will be serving up fresh new cocktails featuring Boulder Spirits Gin. Guests receive a souvenir glass, sample a variety of cocktails and small bites, and vote for their favorite new drink and paired bite. $75, thedairy.org.

Variety Show at Trident: 6 p.m., Trident Booksellers & Cafe, 940 Pearl St., Boulder. This monthly show,  “And Now … Featuring” brings in local artists of all kinds — poets, musicians, comedians, dancers and performance artists — to this open jam session, followed by the Variety Show. Erie celebrates Juneteenth: 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Coal Creek Park, 575 Kattell St., The event will include family-friendly activities, food trucks, music and other entertainment. The event will feature a concert with the Hot Lunch band, various other entertainers, vendors and educational literature celebrating Black freedom. Free; erieco.gov.

Longmont Juneteenth Family Celebration: 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Roosevelt Park, 700 Longs Peak Ave., Longmont. The community is gathering to celebrate diversity and to share, educate and appreciate one another. The family-friendly event will be alcohol-free, tobacco-free and cannabis-free. Check out the main entertainer, R&B singer Chrisette Michele, who won a Grammy Award in 2009 for her song “Be OK.” The event also includes music, fashion, vendor and information booths, activities for kids, drum line performances from local high schools and food.
