Sophie Riback OBITUARY

Sophie (Skalaban) Riback, 100, died peacefully at the Apple Rehab Center on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024. Born in Waterbury, her family moved to Plainville when she was a small child. She spent her entire life on Whiting Street, where she grew up, raised her son, cared for multiple generations of family and friends, and tormented the local police by cramming a dozen neighborhood kids into her car for rides to school.

She was passionate and devoted in her faith, her career and family, and her community. Her love and care was tireless and always accompanied by her infectious smile and laughter.

Sophie had a long and rewarding career working for TRW, GE, and Ideal Machinery. When she wasn’t at work or home, you could find her at the local dancehall, where she would polka for hours. When her body could no longer keep up with the dancing, she still supported events by collecting entrance fees at the door. She was also a regular volunteer for the Plainville Senior Center and VFW.

Sophie is predeceased in death by her husband John, siblings Alex and Helen, nephew Robert, grandson Cody, and grand-nephew James John.

She is survived by her son, John, and wife MaryEllen, her nieces MaryAnn and Carol, four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren who will miss her dearly. We are grateful to the many helping hands who cared for her and surrounded her in kindness during her final years at Apple Rehab.

Family and friends may gather on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St. Plainville. Prayers and words of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m., followed by committal services at West Cemetery. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
