Mary Jo Marion OBITUARY

Mary Jo Marion, 93, of Enfield, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at the Suffield House nursing home. She was born on February 8, 1931 in Thompsonville, the daughter of the late Stefano and Antonina (Sferrazza) Viola. She graduated from Enfield High School in 1948 and worked at Hamilton Standard for several years before marrying and relocating to Dallas and Tulsa. Mary cared very much about those around her, and throughout her life she sought out opportunities to engage with her community and to help others. She spent much of her adulthood living in Tulsa, OK, where she and her family were deeply involved in volunteer work and social justice advocacy through their church. After returning to Connecticut in her retirement, Mary Jo spent the next 20 years working at Bradley Airport on weekends as a volunteer at the information desk helping many travelers find their way around the airport. During these same 20 years she worked at the Enfield Senior Center on weekdays as a volunteer helping out in the kitchen. She was an avid sports fan, following the Yankees and especially her beloved Hartford Whalers. She loved to crochet afghans for loved ones, dance to all kinds of music, including at the senior center’s Friday night concerts, and join friends or family for a tasty meal or a trip to the beach. Most of all, she just loved life, as the simplest things pleased her. Mary is survived by her longtime companion Chris Savluk of Enfield; two sons, Paul Marion of Tulsa and Joseph Marion of Pembroke Pines, FL; granddaughters Mikellyn Ray and Sadie Lee Marion; two brothers, James Viola (Gail) of Suffield and Joseph Viola of West Hartford; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary was predeceased by two sisters, Josephine Etkin (Lloyd) and Sylvia Yeargers (Glenn), and by her former husband, Paul Marion. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home has care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org To leave condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
