Frederick S. Moffatt OBITUARY

Frederick Strickland Moffatt, 95, of Farmington, died Saturday, July 6, 2024, surrounded by his family. Fred was born in Hartford to the late Isaac Jackson “Jack” and Mary (nee Strickland) Moffatt on December 24, 1928. He was a 1950 graduate of Hartford Public High School, where he excelled in athletics and became a three-sport letterman as a freshman in basketball, baseball and track. His baseball skills earned him a tryout with the Boston Braves the precursor to the Milwaukee Braves.

Fred, along with his childhood friend Bud Phillips, founded Phillips and Moffatt Landscaping. Later it became Moffatt and Raymond Landscaping, which is still in business today.

For most of his adult life, and in retirement, Fred was a fixture at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford, where he was active in the Men’s Club, becoming President in 1976. Fred loved the camaraderie of playing golf with his friends (“The Gabes”) and competition in the Men’s Club events. It is safe to say Fred was somewhat of a local legend, due to his razor-sharp short game winning the Club Championship in 1976. He won the Senior Club Championship six times between 1984 and 2001. He also won the Senior/Seniors in 1995, the 70 and Over Championship three times and the Masters (over 80) in 2013 at the age of 85.

Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his first wife, Jenny (JoAnn) Davia; his second wife, Anne Armstrong; his stepdaughter, Colby Armstrong; and his sister, Phyllis Moffatt Barile. He is survived by his children, Mark Moffatt (Tracy) and Beth Moffatt all of Naples, FL and Ken Moffatt of Bristol, CT; his stepsons, David Armstrong (Rita) of Winchester, VA and Will Armstrong (Cindy) of Atlanta, GA; his nine grandchildren; and his 13 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Friday, (July 12), from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave, West Hartford, followed by a 5:00 p.m. Memorial Service. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Rockledge Golf Club, 289 South Main St., West Hartford beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be private at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to Special Olympics of Connecticut/West Hartford Golf Program, 2666 State St. Suite 1, Hamden, CT 06517. Please note with donation: In Memory of Fred Moffatt/Golf Program. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
