Fred S. Katten OBITUARY

Fred S. Katten, 97, of West Hartford died July 3, 2024. Born October 12,1926, in Halsdorf, Germany to Siegmund and Betty (Baer) Katten. In 1938, the family moved to Connecticut and avoided future persecution in Nazi Germany. He attended Hartford schools. At 24, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany as an interpreter due to his command of the language. After his tour of duty, he returned to West Hartford to work with his father and uncle as a cattle dealer. He purchased land in South Windsor and raised cattle there for decades. He was married to Ruth (Glasser) for 62 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Stuart (Beth Messinger) of West Hartford, grandsons Gary (West Hartford) and Samuel (CA) and a daughter-in-law Deborah (Manzi) of Berlin. He was a longtime member of the former Tikvoh Chadoshoh and Jewish War Veterans. He was predeceased by his son Alan and his brother Henry. A private graveside service with full military honors was held on Monday July 8, 2024, at B’nai Tikvoh Shalom Cemetery. For Shiva details contact the Emanuel Synagogue.
