Carol Hamel OBITUARY

Carol (Foley) Hamel, 90, beloved wife of the late Francis Gordon Hamel, passed away on Sunday July 7, 2024.

Carol was born a Depression era baby on December 16, 1933, in West Hartford, Connecticut, to the late Thomas and Margaret Foley. She grew up in West Hartford and after marrying Gordon in 1960 she settled in nearby Farmington. Carol was a dedicated Connecticuter and a passionate fan of the UCONN women’s basketball team for over 30 years – long before it was popular to support women’s basketball.

In social settings, Carol was quiet, but those close to her knew her deep listening skills and quick wit. She was the epicenter of the family, always remembering details of everyone’s lives and sending thoughtful cards and words of support at the right moment. She had a knack for wordplay and could always lighten the mood with a clever remark. Above all, Carol was a devoted mother and grandmother, cherishing every detail of her family’s lives and offering unconditional love and support.

Carol is survived by her three daughters, Sharon (Bethan), Kathy (Blake), and Nancy (Scott), and her four grandchildren, Courtney LaTourrette, Christopher LaTourrette, Cyrus Hill, and Teddy Hill. Her family was her pride and joy, and she found immense happiness when they were all together.

Professionally, Carol worked for many years at Wheeler Clinic as a statistician, where she forged lifelong friendships with her kindness and wit. She was also known for her involvement in community activities, most notably leading a Girl Scout troop for over 10 years.

Carol’s faith was central to her life, and she actively participated in St. Mary’s Parish as a CCD teacher, volunteer, and parishioner. One of the highlights of her spiritual journey was attending a mass by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, an experience that deeply moved her.

An avid sports enthusiast, Carol’s passion for UCONN women’s basketball was unmatched. She loved discussing Geno Auriemma’s coaching strategies and post-game interviews, always seeking improvement in the team’s performance.

Carol Hamel leaves behind a legacy of graceful strength, intelligence, and compassion. She was a role model for her daughters, grandchildren, and those who knew her well, demonstrating how to navigate life as a strong, independent woman while remaining deeply caring and empathetic.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, July 11th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Mary Star of the Sea, Unionville. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

Carol’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
