UConn football fortified a key position Monday, landing a commitment from linebacker D.J. Morgan, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame.

Morgan played sparingly over three years at Notre Dame before finishing his degree requirements this spring. He will be eligible to play immediately at UConn and retains two years of eligibility.

Morgan will likely compete for playing time immediately when he arrives in Storrs this summer. Linebacker was one of UConn’s weaker position groups in 2018, even before Santana Sterling graduated and Darrian Beavers and Marshe Terry transferred (to Cincinnati and Northern Illinois, respectively). Morgan joins juniors Eddie Hahn, Omar Fortt and Ryan Gilmartin; sophomores Kevon Jones and Ian Swenson; redshirt freshman Jordan Morrison and junior-college transfer Dillion Harris as potential starters at one of the Huskies’ linebacker spots.

Morgan is one of six transfers to join UConn this offseason but only the second (along with Art Thompkins, formerly of Toledo) to come from an FBS school.

UConn coach Randy Edsall has said he will continue to seek additions to what is now a 20-member class of newcomers.
