ActUp Theater proudly describes itself as “a regional inner-city community theater that aims to create meaningful impact in the community by providing a creative outlet for youth and the surrounding at-risk community.”

The company chooses ideal projects for such a mission: past productions have included the urban Oz musical “The Wiz,” an anthology of African-American songs and writings titled “Stand,” and a popular annual presentation of “Ebony Annie — The Hip-Hop Musical,” an adaptation of “Annie.”

From April 4 to 13, ActUp Theater is staging “Raisin,” the 1973 musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s classic drama “A Raisin in the Sun.”

From April 4 to 13, ActUp Theater is staging “Raisin,” the 1973 musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s classic drama “A Raisin in the Sun.” It’s about a family that’s trying to move into a better neighborhood in Chicago, but faces racism and segregation.

There are four performances: April 4, 5 and 12 at 6:30 p.m. and April 13 at 3 p.m., in the Lyceum Center, 227 Lawrence St., Hartford. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors. A talk-back reception with community figures, to be held after each performance, has a separate admission charge of $10. 860-573-1503, actuptheater.org.
