Shocking Deeds in East Timor

In East Timor (now Timor Leste), Prabowo and the Suharto family made their killing by exterminating as much as a fifth of the population during the 24-year occupation. In 1999 the Suharto family controlled 564,867 hectares of land, mostly used for timber and sugarcane plantations. Titiek owned marble quarries, had a monopoly on coffee production and export, was co-owner of a pearling company and, helped by pro-integration Timorese officials, of a drinking water and a textile company. Prabowo’s local protégé, governor Abilio Osorio Soares, was deputy head of the board that determined who could invest in East Timor.
