One of the few silver linings to emerge from the pandemic was the rise of excellent outdoor restaurants in London. Many of London’s best restaurants are now firmly in on the act, and al-fresco finger-licking is no longer reserved for park benches and tasty street food spots – of which the capital has many, we must add. While London’s best pubs are no strangers to outdoor crowds the moment a slither of sunshine peeks through the overcast springtime skies, it took a while for true gastronomic temples to embrace the great outdoors. Now, alongside pretty outdoor bars and pub gardens, you can enjoy multi-course sittings among friends and foliage, people-watching to your heart's content. These are the tastiest tried-and-tested outdoor restaurants in London spots for a hearty seasonal spread.
1. Bacchanalia Mayfair
Bacchanalia’s linen-topped tables and red chairs have spilled onto the streets of manicured Mayfair just in time for spring through to summer. Surrounded by huge potted olive trees and green vines, tables wrap around the front of the restaurant’s impressive gilded and glass-fronted exterior. The menu is slightly overwhelming, hearty Mediterranean feasting with a focus on Greek cuisine, except generous portions and extravagant cocktails. We loved the chicken souvla - grilled juicy chicken served with a spicy feta spread, a refreshing mint and cucumber salad and the tagliatelle truffle pasta dish with mushroom butter and rich black truffle.

2. Claridge's, Mayfair
Claridge’s restaurant needs little introduction. It holds the crown as one of London’s finest dining addresses – yet the narrow summer terrace tucked away behind a wall of foliage is a hidden summer delight. As the terrace opens or the summer season once more, a new menu delivers some exciting twists on restaurant signature dishes, such as a daily changing trio of savoury crumpets and the sumptuous CFC (Claridge’s Fried Chicken). Other highlights include the cookie sandwich with vanilla ice cream and the most decadent chocolate dipping sauce, recommended to be washed down with a cool glass of Champagne or even a sparkling rosé. Right in the heart of Mayfair, Claridge’s terrace is the secret summer spot to escape the bustling streets of central London.

Down a side street in Covent Garden, large blue parasols cover a secluded courtyard lined by potted olive trees. It’s a full-on meat feast at Temper - cuts are aged in-house, smoked, barbecued and grilled before reaching your plate doused in marinate or served straight up. Plates are best shared between the table; order a mix of tacos, including the succulent sober pig (juicy pulled pork) and the deconstructed cheeseburger. Then a few meaty plates. We loved the beef brisket served on a flaky Indian paratha, and the pork rib drizzled in a sticky, sweet, and sour sauce. If sharing isn’t your thing, order a 40-day aged steak with peppercorn sauce for dipping and a side of beef-fat potatoes infused with garlic and melted raclette.

Something about this lively little Notting Hill side street makes you feel like you’re on holiday. And if you stumbled into Orasay on a city break, you’d be daydreaming about it once back home. The seafood-rich menu is a celebration of seasonal goodies and changes each month to reflect what’s available seasonally. Expect Cooley oysters, cured sardines and baby squid followed by puddings, each one paired with a digestif or dessert wine. The covered dining tables on the curbside are few, so be sure to secure an early supper as far ahead of your visit as possible.

5. Casa Pastor, King’s Cross
If you want a rain-safe al-fresco table, this Mexican terrace is just the spot, based on the lower floor of King’s Cross shopping haven Coal Drops Yard. The menu is an indulgent run-through of Mexican favourites, including chicken, prawn or mushroom tacos, among others, short rib coated in a muscovado and coriander seed rub, and sides of grilled corn and pinto beans. There’s also a fabulously extensive mezcal and tequila selection, perfect for sipping on the rocks under the sun.

6. Ombra, Bethnal Green
Sitting on the covered terrace outside Ombra on a sunny evening sipping spritzes next to Regent’s Canal, it's quite easy to forget that you're in the depths of East London. And that’s before you’ve even gotten stuck into a bowl of steaming fresh pasta. All homemade on-site, Ombra serves up authentic Italian joyful plates with well-chosen Italian wines. If you can’t decide on what to eat, there’s a tasting menu for dinner for £65 per person – just don’t miss the tiramisu.

7. Fallow, St James’s
This Mayfair restaurant draws in the city’s foodie crowd. Expect a small, ever-changing menu including dishes such as venison tartar, monkfish tikka masala, confit Jerusalem artichoke, and the classic Fallow burger – aged dairy cow, braised short rib, bacon, shallot, and cheese in a brioche bun. The outdoor terrace can be heated, so this is one al-fresco spot for all the seasons.

The original outdoor/indoor foodie haunt, Borough Market is the place to go for large groups, particularly when different palates need to be catered to. It may be a push to pull it into our outdoor restaurants in London guide, but we have no shame when it comes to our love of this delicious oasis. Pick up hot pasta from Padella if you’re prepared to brave the queue, or try a little harder and secure one of the few tables lined up outside the restaurant. Applebee’s Fishbox is the place to go for scrumptious seafood wraps, Taiwanese street food at its finest is on offer at Bao Borough, and Gourmet Goat’s sustainable Cypriot fare is never a bad idea. Before exploring one of the London attractions nearby or lazing away an afternoon in a park, bag up doughnuts from Bread Ahead and a bottle of something from family-run wine merchants Cartwright Brothers Vintners.

9. Rochelle Canteen, Shoreditch
Rochelle Canteen constructed a cosy heated gazebo within the grounds of a former primary school in Shoreditch so it could continue to serve Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson’s classic comfort food. And it's still going strong. Visit for seasonal sustenance such as pork chops with purple sprouting broccoli, and spinach and ricotta bakes. The best school dinners around by a long shot.

Although we’ve been spending more time than ever in gardens over the past few years, none come close to the verdant surroundings of Petersham Nurseries. The flower-filled glasshouse restaurant has a heated pergola for maximum al-fresco comfort and serves thoughtful seasonal dishes such as plump burrata and tomatoes, organic Haye Farm beef tartare, and grilled monkfish with clams and wild garlic. Go for a long lunch or an early supper to leave time to browse the nursery and take home some new leafy friends to enhance your own outdoor space.

This has to be the prettiest courtyard in the West End. Complete with flower installations, huge terracotta pots, and the smartest outdoor furniture we've ever seen, this is the second restaurant from Petersham Nurseries in Covent Garden. La Goccia is more casual than Petersham next door (which also has a small number of tables outside), serving delicious plates of crunchy signature fried chicken, homemade paccheri with organic braised beef ragu, and juicy skewers of meats and king oyster mushrooms. Everything on the plate is as pretty as the surroundings and really that’s the draw – a setting as good for a glass of rosé and a bowl of smoked almonds as it is for a full-on feast.

On the seventh floor of The Stratford Hotel lies this farm-to-table restaurant run by former Chiltern Firehouse chef Patrick Powell. Muted, Scandi-style interiors place full emphasis on the food – for good reason. Starters could include crab with barbequed carrot and potato vichyssoise, while mains might feature line-caught pollock and lobster, decorated with and flavoured by seasonal goodies. The sheltered terrace is set among an elevated meadow of wildflowers, with water features dotted around.

13. Brat at Climpson’s Arch, London Fields
Since opening in 2018, the Basque-inspired Shoreditch restaurant from Tomos Parry has been one of our favourites – and its sister restaurant in nearby London Fields is as good as the original. Taking over the yard outside the arch where beloved Broadway Market coffee shop Climpson & Sons roasts its beans, the covered but breezy space is toasty, with heaters and the smell of charcoal-cooked fish. Groups of two to six can order from the daily changing menu of small sharing plates – if available, go for the grilled puffed bread with anchovies – and bigger dishes such as sizzling whole turbot with a side of smoked potatoes. Be sure to leave space for pudding: the San Sebastián-style burnt cheesecake is too good to share.

For a feast that feels more like a night out, the Hoxton, Southwark’s glamorous rooftop restaurant is hard to beat. On the 14th floor, Seabird’s terrace has come into its own. With views across the city, palm trees, heaters, and a retractable awning for wet days, it has an ample menu of oysters, seafood platters and Spanish and Portuguese-inspired dishes that will make you feel as if you’re on holiday. Book an early evening table to watch the sunset with a Caipirinha or head in for the Oyster Happy Hour; oysters start from three pounds each while gin and vodka martinis are seven pounds, all between 3pm and 6pm Monday to Friday.

Hidden down a side street just off the King’s Road, Stanley’s secret garden is a blooming escape for those in the know. It takes its inspiration from the English country garden, with cascading plants and blossoms covering the courtyard restaurant and orangery. Start by smothering fresh sourdough in rosemary brown butter before devouring starters such as whipped chicken liver pate and South Coast scallops. Meaty mains include roasted cod and Gloucestershire Old Spots pork, but vegetarians are considered on the carefully curated menus.

It is a thrilling moment when the maître d' at the River Café shows you to one of the white-clothed tables on the terrace. Short of having a standing reservation throughout the summer, you'll just have to keep your fingers crossed. But when the stars align, it's a supreme treat. The number of Italian families sitting in the garden attests to the extraordinary authentic and inventive food coming out of Ruth Rogers' open kitchen. Huge plates of roasted wild sea bass and thick veal chops fly out of the kitchen with precision, while smaller, zesty pasta and risotto bowls make for a great lighter option. Opt for a starter and a primi dish, and you’re more likely to have room for some of the restaurant’s homemade gelato – choose from a range of flavours including caramel, roasted almond, hazelnut and strawberry sorbet. Even if you live East, this, above all others, is the restaurant to go West for.

17. The Ivy Chelsea Garden, Chelsea
This walled garden feels like a secret even though it's always packed. The space feels utterly English with climbing roses, ivy, wisteria and a stone water feature in the centre. Sit on the blue-and-white-striped cushions and order Whispering Angel rosé and plates of cured smoked salmon and buffalo mozzarella, followed by steaks done to your exact order. Designed by master landscapers Ginkgo Gardens, there's a retractable roof over the terrace, which means it's open all year round. Probably London's most magical garden restaurant, booking is a must well ahead of time during the warmer months.

It's the marvellous views of Tower Bridge and the Shard from this riverside terrace which make it a spot worth shouting about. Come for an after-work spritz in one of the summer cabanas or winter igloos and tuck into sourdough pizzas topped with 'nduja and buffalo mozzarella. There are also super salads packed with kale and quinoa, delicate courgette fritti and succulent seared king prawns perfect for sharing. Just remember to specifically request a spot on the terrace, or you might find yourself in the main restaurant staring longingly out of the giant glass windows.

19. The Orangery at Number Sixteen, South Kensington
Tucked behind the Firmdale Group's Number Sixteen hotel in South Kensington you'll find an English garden complete with mini-manicured hedges and a koi-filled pond. The Orangery restaurant is a toned-down version of the colourful quirky look the group's designer Kit Kemp is best known for (Ham Yard Hotel in Soho; The Whitby in New York). Tables and chairs are painted a pretty pastel green and giant terracotta pots are spilling with nasturtium. On the menu is smoked salmon and lemon sourdough toast, grilled radicchio salad, and a range of appetisers sure to get the party started.

During the summer, Officina 00 moves its tables onto the streets of Shoreditch, with parasols and blankets on hand for the unpredictable British weather. Pasta is made daily on-site and paired with authentic Italian ingredients and unconventional cooking methods to create punchy statement dishes. To start, the creamy burrata is served on asparagus, while aubergine and nduja croquettes are drizzled with sticky honey. The staff recommend three main pasta dishes between two, and we particularly enjoyed the house favourite, occhi – pasta pockets filled with lamb shank Genovese, parsley pesto and aged provolone. For pudding, order the crunchy tiramisu, sprinkled with plenty of chocolate and orange zest and oozing Cointreau. The food is good, but this place is worth a visit if only for its refreshing Italian cocktails – each with a twist. 21. Quo Vadis, Soho
Soho stalwart Quo Vadis has been delighting customers since 1926, and even more so now with head chef Jeremy Lee’s innovative dishes. When the weather is good, they open the few sought-after tables on the street. Expect punchy pasties, super-fresh seafood platters and retro takes on classics. This place is just as good for coffee catch-ups and a light bite to eat – the central Soho location is great for people-watching.

This is the go-to spot for every jolly Chelsea family celebration, the fail-safe best bet for candle-lit dates, the dream long weekend lunch, and the hottest ticket for supper when the awnings above the garden are opened up to the sky. Come in the evening, as early as you can, to get a table outside among the olive trees and pots of rosemary. The old-school Italian menu has barely changed since the restaurant opened more than 50 years ago but the spaghetti vongole and calamari are still just right. And the brilliantly retro pudding trolley (tiramisu, profiteroles, lemon tart, a decadent chocolate torte) puts many patisseries to shame.

23. Mazi, Notting Hill
With its vine-laced summer pergola and hanging lanterns, this little deck feels as if it's still (just) under the radar. Everyone who comes crams in together – tables of models with their photographer boyfriends nibbling at jars of whipped-to-a-cloud taramasalata are elbow-to-elbow with gatherings of Greek mothers and impeccably dressed children being deliciously European and staying up all night. The sharing plates of grilled octopus, prawn risotto and hot honey-roasted tomatoes are much more sophisticated than they sound.

Wood-smoked and barbecued meat is very much the thing here, and with queues at the door, it’s a proven success. David Carter, founder and chef of Smokestak and co-founder of nearby Manteca, is responsible for the meat-filled menu and open-kitchen cooking techniques. The crispy ox cheek served with an anchovy mayo to start is one of the highlights – soft, petite, and jam-packed with flavour. For mains, opt for the succulent charred pork belly rib with pickled cucumber and the oak-smoked beef brisket with mustard barbecue. Meats are served on a metal tray with dipping sauces, perfect for sharing. We recommend the refreshing pickled red cabbage and mint slaw and a potato dish of either skin-on chips with aioli for dipping, or the smoked jacket potato which has been deconstructed and jam-packed with mustard rarebit flavours. If you’ve room for pudding, the warm sticky toffee pudding topped with clotted cream gelato is a winner. 25. The Farrier, Camden
Camden Market’s first-ever pub, The Farrier is one of several openings hoping to reinvigorate this north London space. Inside, the restaurant embraces its heritage as Grade II-listed former stables, with exposed brickwork and cast-iron features lit by plenty of candles. Slotted into a floor-to-ceiling wine wall are natural, biodynamic and organic bottles from small producers around the world – we tried the Teliani Valley Kakhuri No 8 amber wine from Kakheti, Georgia, a skin-contact orange wine with a rich, dry flavour. There's also a courtyard area warmed by fire pits dotted between tables. The menu includes rustic, comforting dishes; expect starters of kimchi risotto and tiger prawns in garlic and chilli chorizo oil alongside larger pub classics of beer battered hake and flat iron steaks.

This space is hidden below ground through the many weaving, opulent hallways of The Lanesborough Hotel – luckily there’s no chance of getting lost as a doorman in a top hat will escort you. The covered terrace bar is decked out with plush leather chairs and low candle-lit wooden tables, walls are shrouded in the foliage of bromeliads and ferns. Bag a spot by the fireplace for the warmest seat in the house. There are plenty of whiskies and wines on the menu, along with hand-crafted cocktails. When it comes to food, everything’s made to share – try the crispy squid and chargrilled flatbread, and dive into a Wagyu burger. Hotel guests, Knightsbridge locals, and those in the know make up the crowd here – it’s smart and under the radar.

27. Parrillan, Kings Cross
Unmatched tapas from the team behind Barrafina, sparkling wines, and, hopefully, a sunny terrace in King's Cross is all you need to feel like you've had a holiday in Spain. Cook juicy prawns, Iberico pork, and tuna on the central table charcoal parrilla. Hearty stews are best for chillier days, while chargrilled pineapple is a treat whatever the season.

Having fed Mayfair’s crowds for more than 100 years, Bentley’s has proven it’s quick to adapt. Celebrity chef Richard Corrigan has been at the helm of the restaurant, one of London’s oldest oyster bars, for over 15 years. Book into its heated, covered terrace for feasts of fresh native, rock, and dressed oysters, grilled fish, and steaks sourced from around the British and Irish isles, with views up and down Swallow Street. Don’t skip the famous soda bread.

29. The Laundry
The outdoor terrace at The Laundry in Brixton is a welcome oasis of calm amongst the hustle and bustle that is Brixton. The Laundry is tucked away next to Brixton Village in a beautiful historic building that the team has done a fantastic job maintaining. Outside tables offer plenty of comfy corners where guests can lounge against pillows and catch up over a cocktail, from which diners have many intriguing choices. I went with the Cucumber Margarita, a refreshing cocktail for a balmy summer evening. Plates of seasonal tomatoes arrive paired with a zingy yuzu vinaigrette and creamy burrata with radicchio, orange, and a hazelnut dressing. Sweet tooth? Sip on an espresso martini or tuck into warm chocolate chip cookies served with ice cream.

30. Toklas, Temple
Outdoor dining in London is often tainted by the interminable traffic which inevitably passes your table. Not so at Toklas. Raised metres above the street, cars vanish into oblivion and the view of the facades of beautiful period buildings greets you instead. It is so quiet and so calm, it seems impossible that you're so close to the Strand. As London falls away, the urban surroundings are replaced by flourishing potted plants and simple, yet stylish furniture. The side of the restaurant opens up entirely so even inside you experience the open air. The menu is inspired by the Mediterranean, with seafood heavily spotlighted – expect langoustines, Dover sole, and guinea fowl to make appearances on the weekly menu. Small plates of fishy deliciousness are the catch of the day at this North London institution. In an industrial block just off Holloway Road, the people behind Jolene Bakeries and Primeur have created a magical spot. The inside is industrial and airy, with a daily changing menu scrawled on the chalkboard on the wall, but the small yard outside is a very pleasing place for an al-fresco meal. It’s covered, and heaters make it good for all weathers.

32. Brunswick House, Vauxhall
You could easily pass by this grand house in the middle of the busy Vauxhall gyratory and have no idea of the delights that lay within. Chef Jackson Boxer has turned this Grade II listed Georgian mansion into a dining destination. The interior is stuffed full of antique trinkets, furniture, and chandeliers and the wisteria vine-covered outdoor tables are just as atmospheric. Book the whole space for a special treat or grab one of the terrace tables for a memorable meal.

33. Hyde Park Garden, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London's garden restaurant is back in business. Undoubtedly one of the fanciest al-fresco hideouts in London, well-dressed hotel guests and foodies craving a delicious outing assemble beside the manicured lawn to tuck into menus devised by the team behind Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. The new menu showcases the freshest UK produce, while some of Heston's most famous dishes remain – who could forget those triple-cooked chips? Savour indulgent takes on summer classics and finish with a summery eton mess or gooey sticky toffee pudding, all washed down with a fresh selection of cocktails and an impressive selection of wines.

34. The Maine, Mayfair
Within a hidden courtyard, just metres from Hanover Square, Maine’s summer terrace is a quiet haven away from the heaving streets of Central London. Somewhere between a stately home and a French Brasserie, the restored Georgian townhouse – with beautiful period features – wouldn’t be amiss in a romantic film. Serving Champagne and fresh seafood at its raw bar, including some of the best oysters in the capital, this romance is further reflected in the menu. This is what’s on offer at multiple Casa do Frango sites, where the terraces are some of the best seats in town for a convivial dining experience.
