Review: Ace Hotel New York

A good value at a convenient location (walkable to both Union Square and Midtown).

How did it strike you on arrival?
One of the original places in the city to properly act as a "hotel-as-living room" the Ace's massive lobby lounge is full of both guests and locals tapping away on their laptops, which gives the entire hotel a feeling of social, communal energy.

What’s the crowd like?
It can sometimes feel like a mini Silicon Valley here, and in fact a lot of tech companies put their employees up at this hotel when in town.

Most importantly: Tell us about your room.
Plaid Pendleton bedspreads, retro leather sofas, turntables and dark carpeted floors lend a vintage, '70s-era flair to guest rooms, which are small but stylish.

We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?
Beds are super comfy.

How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?
Who wouldn't love to take the vintage turntable home with them? Even if you aren't into vinyl, they just look so cool. Same with those Smeg refrigerators.

Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.
Bathrooms are small and the shower area is tiny, but a saving grace arrives in the form of the excellent products (shampoo, conditioner and body wash) from Rudy's Barbershop, which smell so good they might make us permanently switch brands at home. Luckily, you can stock up in the lobby's shop.

Food and drink: What does this hotel have on offer? There’s a lobby bar and a Stumptown coffee shop.

We all need Wi-Fi. What’s the word on it here?
Strong, free Wi-Fi.

What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?
We wish the bathroom was a little bigger than a closet, but the cool, retro vibes make up for it. As does the jolt of Stumptown coffee available in the lobby cafe.

Bottom line: worth it, and why?
Prices are usually super reasonable at the Ace, so it's a good value, a very convenient location for wherever you want to go in the city (walkable to both Union Square and Midtown), and a handful of awesome places to eat nearby.
