At least five people are dead and 40 injured after a vehicle barreled through a holiday parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on Sunday, according to the city government.
“At this time, we can confirm that 5 people are deceased and over 40 are injured,” the government posted on its social media sites late Sunday.
“However, these numbers may change as we collect additional information,” it added.
A large section of Main Street remains closed as the investigation continues.
The Green Bay Packers have released a statement this evening offering their condolences and thoughts to the community of Waukesha.
The team, which is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, called for the statewide community to “come together to support each other in these difficult times.”
US President Joe Biden was briefed this evening on the incident in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where an SUV plowed through a holiday parade, a White House official says.
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee released a statement confirming some of their members were injured in the parade tragedy, including children who attend the Waukesha Catholic school and one of their Catholic priests.
Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said police are working with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the identifies of the fatalities – and will not release the number of deceased until the next of kin are notified.

Children’s Wisconsin – a pediatric hospital in Milwaukee – says it is treating 15 patients who were hurt in the parade tragedy.
Aurora Medical Center-Summit, a hospital in Waukesha County, told CNN Sunday night it is treating 13 patients.
Three are listed in critical condition, four in serious condition and six in fair condition.
“We are deeply saddened by today’s senseless tragedy and our hearts are with the Waukesha community,” a statement from the hospital said.
Previously, the hospital said it was treating 12 patients.
Waukesha officials announced there were multiple fatalities in the incident but did not provide a specific number as families are notified.
The School District of Waukesha has canceled classes on Monday after an SUV plowed into crowds at a Christmas parade in the Wisconsin city Sunday night.
“The District will have additional counselors available at all buildings for all students and staff in need of support services,” a message on the school district website said.
City and law enforcement officials said there were “some fatalities” and 23 people – including 12 minors – were injured in the incident.
A person of interest is in custody following the parade crash, police said.
Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, who represents the district in which the parade was held, tweeted out guidance to his constituents searching for family following the SUV incident.
“If you are searching for family, please go to the Waukesha Metro Center, 212 E Saint Paul Ave,” he tweeted.
“I continue to monitor the situation as full details come to light and I’m thankful for all of the first responders who are answering the call for help,” he wrote in a subsequent tweet.

She added, “It hit at least two people right away and rolled over them. And then continued down the road to People’s Park, which is at the end of the block – and then kept going, it didn’t stop.”
Boyle said she heard screaming and people yelling out their children’s names.
She went on to say, “it was not something that I wanted to see.”
Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson said he is offering his “thoughts and prayers” for the victims in Waukesha.
“My gratitude for all law enforcement, medical personnel, and community members who are responding,” he tweeted.
