Denzel Washington considers his marriage with his wife, Pauletta Washington, to be his biggest success. Even though the Hollywood icon has forged a legendary career in showbiz, nothing makes Denzel prouder than the bond he shares with the Wilma actress.

Denzel and Pauletta’s romance first began decades ago when they met on the set of Wilma in 1977. They established a friendship the following year when they reconnected at a party, and eventually, the duo began dating. After more than five years together, Denzel and Pauletta married in 1983.

It wasn’t long before the lovebirds started their family. In 1984, they welcomed their eldest son, John David Washington, followed by their eldest daughter, Katia Washington, in 1987. Four years later, the couple welcomed their twins, Malcolm Washington and Olivia Washington.

Pauletta Isn’t Intimidated By Denzel’s Success

While once chatting with The Root about the experience of being a “strong woman behind” a “powerful man,” Pauletta explained why she isn’t intimated by her hubby’s success. “Any woman behind an influential man has always been there. Maybe the public, and the media, is now saying we recognize you, but take it from me, I’ve been on the scene a long time,” she shared.

She Turned Down Denzel’s Proposals

Denzel and Pauletta have been married since 1983, but it took the actor a few attempts before she said “Yes.” During a joint interview with Access Hollywood in 2013, the lovebirds dished how many times Denzel got down on one knee before she finally agreed to the marriage.

“Why was it twice? Why would I have to ask again?” he joked, while Pauletta chimed in, “Because I said no!” Denzel hilariously replied, “You heard it here first! She turned me down, she said no. And since it was three times, that means she turned me down twice.” Good thing Pauletta finally said yes!

Even though the Equalizer actor doesn’t believe there’s a secret to maintaining a strong marriage, he dished it doesn’t hurt that he does “what” he’s told. “I keep my mouth shut!” he joked with People in 2018. Denzel then praised his longtime love for holding down the fort when it came to life at home with their children. When asked his favorite things about Pauletta, Denzel said, “There are too many things!”

Still, the Training Day star dished the qualities that popped “into” his head. “Security, food, a beautiful home … the difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference,” he continued. “You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home — and not to say a man can’t make a home a home, but my wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids, and protected them and sacrificed for them … she did the heavy lifting.”

She Is Her Hubby’s Biggest Supporter

Denzel has earned countless award nominations and accolades throughout his tremendous career. His beautiful wife has been by his side through it all, joining him for red carpet appearances and awards shows. The same was the case for the 2022 Oscars, where Denzel earned a Best Actor nod for his portrayal of the titular character in The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Pauletta stunned on the red carpet, wearing an off-the-shoulder orange gown and gold earrings. Denzel looked snazzy in a black suit as he posed for photos with his longtime love and shared a few laughs.

They Have Been Through a Lot Together
