Star Deaths of 2024: Pay Tribute to All of the Hollywood Celebrities Who Died So Far This Year
The entertainment industry is grieving after losing some talented stars in 2024 and is still reeling from the deaths of so many bright lights in 2023. Tributes poured in to mourn late celebrities like Adan Canto and Joyce Randolph at the start of this year.
February began with heartbreak for Rocky fans, who learned of Apollo Creed actor Carl Weathers’ death at 76 years old on February 1. The following month brought the death of former General Hospital star Robyn Bernard at age 64. In April, American Idol alum Mandisa died at 47.
In early June, the deaths of Erich Anderson, Janis Paige, Tom Bower and Donald Sutherland were announced.
In July, The Shining star Shelley Duvall died, followed by Richard Simmons. Charmed alum Shannen Doherty died at the age of 53 on July 13, followed by Bob Newhart at the age of 94 on July 18.

Comedy legend Bob Newhart died at the age of 94 on July 18. His longtime publicist confirmed his death in a statement obtained by Rolling Stone, explaining that he passed away in his Los Angeles home after “a series of short illnesses.”

Shannen Doherty died on July 13 after a years-long battle with cancer. She was 53. Shannen’s publicist confirmed her passing in a statement to People on July 14.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” her publicist shared. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Fitness guru Richard Simmons died on July 13 after he was found unresponsive at his home by his housekeeper. He was 76.
Richard had posted on Facebook several times before his death as he thanked fans for their birthday wishes.
“Thank you…I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard,” the former aerobics instructor wrote via Facebook on July 12.

Longtime comedic actor Martin Mull died at the age of 80 on June 29. His daughter, Maggie Mull, paid tribute to her father and confirmed his death via Instagram.
“He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials,” Maggie wrote. “He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs.”
Martin had numerous roles over the years in TV series like Arrested Development, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and more. He also starred in a number of films, including 1985’s Clue, Mr. Mom and more.

Legendary actor Bill Cobbs’ death was announced on June 26 in a statement shared by his family on Facebook.
“We are saddened to share the passing of Bill Cobbs. On Tuesday, June 25, Bill passed away peacefully at his home in California,” the statement read. “A beloved partner, big brother, uncle, surrogate parent, godfather and friend, Bill recently and happily celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by cherished loved ones. The former Boston Celtic, Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trailblazer died “following a prolonged battle with cancer” while “surrounded by his family,” the NBA announced in a May 27 press release.
“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind. As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
He continued, “Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans.”
“As a cherished member of the NBA family for 50 years, Bill will be deeply missed by all those who came to know and love him. My heartfelt condolences to Bill’s wife, Lori; his sons, Adam, Nate, Luke and Chris; and his many friends and colleagues,” Adam concluded.

His mother, Scarlett, confirmed his death to TMZ, explaining that he was shot when he and a coworker witnessed three men attempting to break into his car in downtown Los Angeles.

Louis Gossett Jr., known for his Oscar-winning role in An Officer and a Gentleman, died on March 28. Louis, who was the first Black man to win a Supporting Actor Oscar, was 87 years old. His death was confirmed by his cousin Neal L. Gossett in a statement to The Associated Press.
“Never mind the awards, never mind the glitz and glamor, the Rolls-Royces and the big houses in Malibu. It’s about the humanity of the people that he stood for,” his cousin said in the statement.

The actress best known for playing Terry Brock on ABC’s General Hospital for a six-year run during the 1980s was found dead in San Jacinto, California, on March 12, TMZ reported. She was 64 years old. The Riverside County Coroner identified her body through fingerprints after responding to a death investigation call. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

The actor, who was best known for his role on Curb Your Enthusiasm, died of a heart attack on February 28 at the age of 76, his representative confirmed to Closer. Richard had been living with Parkinson’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with in April 2023.
“His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for all the love, friendship and support and asks for privacy at this time,” a statement from his publicist concluded.
In addition to playing a fictionalized version of himself on the HBO sitcom, Richard was a stand-up comic known for his self-deprecating humor.

Harry Connick Sr., the former longtime district attorney for the city of New Orleans, died on January 25. He was the father of singer and actor Harry Connick Jr. and served as the district attorney for three decades beginning in 1973 to when he retired in 2003.
Connick Jr.’s publicist stated that Connick Sr. died peacefully at his home and surrounded by his family.
A statement provided to the AP included sympathies from New Orleans’ current district attorney Jason Williams.
“Mr. Connick remains the longest-tenured District Attorney, serving from 1973-2003. Such a longstanding public servant gives an enormous amount of themselves to their community — as do their families. Our thoughts are with the Connick family during this difficult time,” Williams said.
