Garth Brooks Talks Coparenting His 3 Daughters With Wife Trisha Yearwood and Ex-Wife Sandy Mahl
For Garth Brooks, becoming a country music star was a lot easier than perfecting fatherhood. While celebrating A&E Biography’s upcoming Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On TV special, the “Friends in Low Places” crooner opened about how wife Trisha Yearwood was his saving grace following his divorce from first wife Sandy Mahl.
“My best friend showed up. It was good, helped me out a lot,” the 57-year-old gushed of Trisha, 55, to Closer Weekly and other reporters at the NYC event on Monday, November 18. “She didn’t have children, either. So we were kind of blind leading the blind.”
Garth, who shares daughters Taylor, 27, August, 25, and Allie, 23, with Sandy, explained that all three of the adults were able to put their differences aside for the sake of the children.
“I’d never wished divorce on anybody, but three children and three parents worked really well — especially since the three girls were all tomboys,” he explained. “So they were all at soccer, track and field, whatever, softball. So never ever did one of those kids take the field where at least one parent wasn’t in the stands.” Aww!
Reflecting on his transition to fatherhood, the Grammy Award winner said his 2001 divorce with Sandy whipped his butt into shape. In fact, Garth — who tied the knot with the “XXX’s and OOO’s” songstress just years later in 2005 — confessed that he even had to take a break from music because of it.
“[I] got divorced, moved back to Oklahoma and left Nashville, left the music business … [I] was living with three strange women that I did not know,” he said of his three daughters. “They were 8, 6 and 4. And I was about to get a crash course in females.”
The “If Tomorrow Never Comes” singer joked about the unfamiliar territory of raising girls considering he grew up alongside five brothers and one sister. “Females ruled my new world now,” he gushed. “The dogs were girls, the horses were girls. So I was all alone on this one.”
Since then, Garth has completely fallen in love with his three incredible daughters. “Man, they’ve got you so wrapped. It’s crazy,” he gushed to Closer and other outlets. “I worship those three girls and they can see it in my face when they see me or surprise me somewhere. And I just, I don’t know. I hope that they feel about me like I felt about my mom. I just really do.”
