Feel the Bern: Opening Day in Detroit has arrived -- and it’s magical

DETROIT – If you had to choose one word to describe Opening Day, that word would be “magical,” especially in Detroit.

It signals the start of spring, although there have been Opening Days that remind you of winter. But it’s Opening Day, and lots of folks make their way downtown to root for their Tigers.

If you think back to when Comerica Park opened up, you’ll remember that it was a forgettable day. The date was April 11, 2000. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 23 years since the park opened up.

The weather that day didn’t leave the 30s. It was cold, it was wet, and it was miserable. But the Tigers were able to beat the Mariners, and they were on their way.

So, if you’re going to the opener on Thursday, make sure you enjoy yourself. The Red Sox are in town. This season apparently could be challenging for the Tigers. It’s almost like there’s been a constant rebuild for several years. But put that aside.

Opening Day is a holiday in the city of Detroit. And remember, the word of the day is magical. OK, Tigers, you’ve got your mantra!
