5 people found clinging to cooler 10 miles off coast in Lake Erie after boat ‘swamped’ by wave

Five people were found clinging to a floating cooler 10 miles off the coast in Lake Erie after their boat got “swamped” by a wave, officials said.

The United States Coast Guard received a call at 11:34 a.m. July 6, 2024, from someone who said their 22-foot boat had been “swamped” by a wave.

A rescue crew from Detroit found the group of five people clinging to a cooler about 10 miles from Ashtabula, Ohio.

The group was taken to Northeast Ohio Regional Airport. There were no medical concerns, officials said.
