Restaurant offers Southern cooking with a side of history

Cornbread is located in Southfield

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Catfish, fried chicken, mac and cheese, and sweet potato pie is just the start of the menu at Cornbread Restaurant and Bar in Southfield. The restaurant also serves up a history lesson.

Cornbread opened in 2021, but it’s considered a sequel to Beans & Cornbread, which originally opened back in 1997. The menu at Cornbread is described as traditional and non-traditional Southern cooking. Diners can enjoy dishes like salmon croquettes and firecracker shrimp. If you want to get a taste of everything, you might want try something called the Kitchen Sink. It includes gumbo, rice, spinach, okra, shrimp, lobster tail, and catfish fingers.

When you walk inside the restaurant, you’ll notice how it highlights historic African Americans. You’ll spot photos on the wall of people like Bessie Coleman who was the first African American woman to hold a pilot’s license. Cornbread also offers shoebox lunches, which serve as a reminder of when African Americans packed lunches in shoeboxes and carried them to work during times of segregation. The shoebox lunches are cardboard boxes that feature photos and the stories of historic African Americans.
