Trash pickup delays plague Metro Detroit communities

New waste contract leads to garbage pileups

DETROIT – A new contract to pick up trash in many communities could be at fault for problems reported all over Metro Detroit.

Many people have reached out to Help Me Hank and said that their trash isn’t being picked up at all, leaving garbage sitting on the curb -- in some cases, left out for weeks.

It’s not just an eyesore for communities, it’s piling up, smelling and potentially bringing pests to the area.

Problems are being reported in Howell, Clinton Township, Clarkston, Sherwood Forest and more.

In Waterford, the community said their yard waste is not being picked up and that’s causing problems.

Where did these problems come from?

GLF Waste -- which had the contract to pick up trash in many communities all over the area -- sold its residential arm of the company to Priority Waste, a change that was official on July 1.

“If you feel neglected, we hear you, we’re coming. Today it’s Hank to the rescue, tomorrow it’s Priority the rescue,” said Matt Allen, with Priority Waste. “We’re picking up the trash. We’ve been working since even through the holiday. We’ve been working every day.”

If you’re still seeing trash on the curb and wondering when your house will get picked up, Local 4 has been told the majority of the trucks are being repaired and are getting back on the road. Trash pickup is expected to happen this week and if it doesn’t, residents are urged to contact Priority Waste immediately to let them know where so they can get a crew out there to take care of the problem.

You can contact Priority on its official website.
