Sylvan Township issues ‘Do Not Drink Water’ advisory after water treatment plant vandalized

Authorities conducting tests to ensure water’s safety

SYLVAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Residents in Sylvan Township are being told to not drink the water after officials a water treatment plant vandalized.

According to authorities, township officials discovered Monday, July 8, that someone had broken into the water treatment plant, caused damage to its interior and tampered with the system controls. There was also evidence of attempts to damage local infrastructure.

Michigan State Police said the suspect -- a 33-year-old man from Belleville -- gained entry by cutting through a barbed wire fence and spray painted the windows in an effort to not be seen inside. He was taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation by law enforcement. City and county officials have issued a “Do Not Drink Water” Advisory for the township.

While there’s no visual evidence the water was contaminated, authorities need to run tests to confirm its safety.

Residents of Sylvan Township are advised to not drink the water and to use bottled water for cooking and drinking.

Anyone who notices differences in the quality of their water is urged to contact Sylvan Township Water & Sewer Authority at 734 475-8890, ext. 112.

This notice doesn’t apply to those who use private wells.
