HOUSTON – As first responders geared up for storm preparations ahead of Hurricane Beryl, deputies in north Harris County came across a troubling sight that escalated into a rescue mission.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez noted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “in the midst of the storm,” deputies were called to the 900 block of Cypress Station near Cypress Creek Pkwy late Sunday night.

That’s where investigators got a call about a man chasing a child with injuries.

Responding officers found the child, 6, and took him to a local hospital for treatment and found him to be in fair condition. However, as the investigation went on, Sheriff Gonzalez said they found a total of six children living “in what was described as deplorable conditions.”

The children’s ages ranged from 7 months - 11 years old. Deputies brought the children food and arrested their mother, Elizabeth Martinez, and a man, Enterio Coronado. The mother was charged with Injury to a Child, while Coronado was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. It’s unclear what his relationship is to the children.

Child Protective Services were also called to assist in the ongoing investigation.
