A&M baseball coach reaffirms commitment to school in fiery press conference following College World Series loss

After Texas A&M fell just short in the College World Series Final, a question about a rival team’s job opening led to a passionate answer from A&M Baseball Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle.

The Aggies went down 6-1 against Tennessee in the winner-takes-all Game 3, but they were able to score four unanswered runs in the last two innings to make the final moments interesting. However, their late rally was not enough to complete the comeback, and the Volunteers took home the championship with a 6-5 win.

Following the loss, TexAgs.com managing editor Richard Zane asked Schlossnagle about his future at A&M, with regards to rumors circulating about a recent job opening.

The “recent job opening” Zane was referencing is University of Texas head baseball coach, which came open yesterday after the Longhorns parted ways with David Pierce.

Schlossnagle clearly wasn’t fond of the question, and gave the following response before leaving the podium:

“I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you. I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again and that hasn’t changed in my mind.

I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job, and I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it. Write that.”

Although that response didn’t explicitly include the phrase “No, I am not interested in the Texas job,” such a passionate rebuttal should give the Aggie faithful at least a minor sigh of relief. However, UT also has reason to believe it could be the program to make Schlossnagle think long and hard about his future.

Before taking the A&M job in 2021, Schlossnagle spent 16 seasons coaching at TCU, during which he built the Horned Frogs into a perennial contender. For a majority of that time, he worked under Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, who is now the AD at UT.

In three seasons at A&M, Schlossnagle has led the Aggies to two College World Series appearances and a 135-62 overall record.
