Fire at recycling facility in NE Harris Co. leaves 3 firefighters hospitalized

Three Houston-area firefighters have been hospitalized due to smoke inhalation responding to a fire in northeast Harris County. Two of the firefighters have since been released.

The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. at Prestige Auto and Metal Recycling located at 7615 East Mount Houston Road. The facility primarily recycles debris from scrap metal, cars and lithium-ion batteries from scooters.

The enflamed pile is roughly 80 feet tall and stretches across about an acre of land.

Units with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office are currently shuttling in water to try to stop the flames. Multiple other agencies, including 13 different fire departments, are also assisting the situation.

The Eastex Fire Department updated the situation on Facebook, adding that the relief efforts will likely result in traffic delays in the area for the rest of the day. Early estimates say the situation could take two days to resolve.
