What’s Going Around: Strep, pink eye and more viruses popping up in Houston area

HOUSTON – Just as school is coming to an end -- viruses and stomach bugs are going around.

CYPRESS

“In Cypress we’re seeing a lot of pink eye,” said MinuteClinic family nurse practitioner Israel Martinez. “As children gear up for summer day camps, it is important for them to wash their hands frequently throughout the day.”

KATY

“In the Katy area we are seeing an increase in strep throat among patients,” said MinuteClinic family nurse practitioner and senior practice manager Linda Moghalu. “Thorough and frequent handwashing is essential - and reminder to avoid sharing cups and utensils!”

HOUSTON

According to Legacy Community Health - Baker Ripley Clinic in Southwest Houston, Medical Director for Pediatrics Dr. Rubina Khan says kids are frequently diagnosed with viral rashes like hand-foot-mouth disease, strep throat, and flu still hasn’t completely disappeared yet this season.

Plus, patients at Legacy Community Health are also coming in for pregnancy-related complications like anemia, gestational diabetes, and pre-eclampsia.

According to Dr. Erica Giwa, those can be complications that are common across Harris County, and she tells her patients that pregnancy needs a strong support system to stay healthy for the full term.

“March of Dimes has a doula program,” said OB/GYN Dr. Erica Giwa, “For moms who are delivering in Harris County who are on Medicaid. So that is a free program through the March of Dimes, so definitely that’s an option.”
