In a big day for Beamish Museum, visitors could see its 1950s cinema and new shops unveiled for the first time.

This weekend marked the official opening of the latest additions to the County Durham attraction and they could not fail to impress. The 1950s Town expansion also includes an electrical shop and record and a toy shop with a dolls' hospital.

The launch follows a special preview day where Chroniclelive was invited along for a sneak peak at the new attractions, which form part of the ambitious Remaking Beamish project - the biggest in the museum's history. Now, following images taken during that special event, photographs of Saturday's public opening show more scenes inside the new buildings.

For extra pictures, including those of a new drovers tavern and pottery which recently opened in the outdoor museum's Georgian area, see here. The fifties opening day celebrations included a parade, led by Ryhope Allstars Jazz Band and the Ryhope miners’ banner, with music, dancers and vehicles.

Beamish chief executive Rhiannon Hiles said: “We’ve had an absolutely fantastic time celebrating the opening." She added: “It marks an important and exciting moment for the museum and it means so much to us to hear from visitors how much they love these new 1950s and Georgian additions."
