Side Street Studio Arts poetry-related exhibition opens Friday

Side Street Studio Arts’ opening reception for an exhibition of self-portrait poems and collages created by Sanctuary Poets will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, in its 15 Ziegler Court gallery in Elgin.

Sanctuary Poets is a community writing group led by Chasity Gunn, Elgin poet laureate emerita. The poets will read their works at the reception, according to a Sanctuary Poets Facebook page post.

Judson University’s Bike Shop hosting Saturday morning rides

The nonprofit Judson Bike Shop is hosting a free bike ride from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20.

Anyone who wants to participate should meet outside Herrick Chapel on the Judson University’s Elgin campus at 1151 N. State St. Bike rental fees are waived for the event, which is held most Saturdays, the organization’s Facebook post said.

Blues show outside West Dundee’s pump house Sunday, July 14

The blues band Aces will present a free outdoor concert from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 14, outside the village of West Dundee’s refurbished pump house building at 98 Oregon Ave.

The pump house is located behind the West Dundee VFW Post. Some seating will be provided, but attendees should consider bringing their own lawn chairs, according to a Facebook post for the event. Charcuterie and beverages will be available to purchase.

Elgin History Museum to hold brown bag lunch talk on LeeWards

Local historian Linda Rock will talk about LeeWards, the now-defunct arts-and-crafts company that had been based in Elgin, at a brown bag lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St.

LeeWards was founded in Elgin in 1947, and its main building was located on North State Street, according to the museum website. Along with talking about the retailer’s history, Rock will show LeeWards-related items from her personal collection.

Admission is free for museum members and $5 for guests.
