A sign of better community times versus last year, officials note, was the return of the annual “Scarecrow Festival” in Barrington, running in Memorial Park more like the pre-pandemic version families flocked to.

Village officials said some 500 people attended Scarecrow Festival Oct. 16. The event featured about 75 scarecrows created by business owners and residents, with some also displayed throughout town. Attendees could also make a scarecrow at the festival and take a photo with it.

“This year’s Scarecrow Fest was one to remember on a perfect fall day,” village spokeswoman Clancy Potts told Pioneer Press in an email.

School of Rock performed, Bob the DJ played “spooky tunes,” there was face painting, balloon sculpting, horseback rides, free pumpkins to decorate, and other games and activities, Potts said. She explained that Barrington Youth And Family Services co-sponsored the festival, and other local organizations, including BStrong, the Barrington Area Library, the Kaleidoscope School of Fine Art and Barrington Area Conservation Trust also participated

“A beautiful day in Barrington to kick off the fall season with free family fun!” Potts wrote in the email.

The scarecrow decorating competition saw business owners and residents submit photos of their creations for the community to vote on, Potts explained. Three resident winners will each win a $50 gift certificate to a local business, and the one business winner will be publicly recognized at the Nov. 1 Village Board meeting.
