Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills set Halloween trick-or-treating hours, offer suggestions for homeowners to show their participation

Halloween is Sunday and Libertyville, Mundelein and Vernon Hills officials have set each respective towns’ hours for kids to be out trick-or-treating, even as some look to make a more “permanent’ schedule for the holiday activity — regardless of the day of the week it falls on.

The time guidelines are also tinged with public health safety recommendations, as the the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Libertyville

The village of Libertyville set trick-or-treating hours at 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Officials urge those not feeling well to stay in and not participate. As is tradition, officials also ask those who will pass out treats to turn on their porch light as a signal to trick-or-treaters the homeowner is participating.

Officials also ask residents to not distribute homemade treats or fruit.

“Parents and residents should utilize their own discretion to determine if trick-or-treating is an ‘at-risk’ activity,” village officials stated in a news release.

MainStreet Libertyville is also hosting its annual “Trick or Treat on MainStreet” event Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their children in costume. Businesses participating will have an orange pumpkin sign in their window, according to event organizers.

Mundelein

Like Libertyville, trick-or-treating in the village of Mundelein will be allowed from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Village officials encourage those participating to follow stated public health guidelines, including wearing a mask, washing hands and keeping socially distanced.

“When it comes to Halloween, each resident must make the decision as to whether they would like to engage in festive activities, and if so, to what level they feel most comfortable,” according to information on the

Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills will have trick-or-treating from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The village is also offering signs to residents who say they either are or are not participating this year. The village website also includes a list of safety guidelines.

At the Oct. 5 Village Board meeting, trustees kicked around the idea of making trick-or-treating a weekend event even if it falls on a weekday. Police Chief Patrick Kreis said at the meeting he believes it will make the event safer, while making it a weekend family-style outing.

“This makes this a family-oriented event for the children that are trick-or-treating,” the police chief said at the meeting. “This is becoming a real popular thing.”

Hawthorn Mall is also hosting a trick-or-treating event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Children age 5 and younger are encouraged to attend with their families. No registration is required.
