Daywatch: Authorities identify John Wayne Gacy victim | Illinois expecting 500,000 vaccine doses initially for kids 5 to 11 | How year-round costume shops endure

Chicago Tribune
UPDATED:

Good morning, Chicago.

Kids ages 5 to 11 could start getting COVID-19 shots as early as next week. Illinois is expecting an initial allotment of about 500,000 doses once the Pfizer shots are authorized for that group — with pediatricians and schools expected to play a big role in the vaccine administration, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said.

In other vaccine news, Moderna says that a low dose of its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and appears to work in 6- to 11-year-olds, as the manufacturer moves toward expanding shots to children.

And Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy said Monday he tested positive for COVID-19 after returning home from Tampa. The coach, who is vaccinated, called it “a reminder to all of us to be extremely cautious.”

Fantasy and Chicago Costume shops are crammed year-round with masks, ‘Game of Thrones’ outfits, cosplay and sexy Darth Vaders — but a Spirit Halloween billboard casts a shadow

As sure as the faltering Bears and elusive Great Pumpkin, Spirit Halloween has become an inevitability of autumn, arriving one day in late summer, seemingly out of nowhere, taking up residence inside hollow husks of empty retail spaces, then vanishing a few months later.

Unlike Spirit, Chicago Costume (est. 1976) and Fantasy Costumes on Milwaukee Avenue (est. 1969) — both Portage Park institutions, within half a mile of each other, serving Halloween but also Christmas, drag shows, fraternity blowouts, bachelorette parties — are anything but seasonal.
