Valpo’s Calumet Avenue undergoes milling, paving work

For the next two weeks, contractors will be doing milling and paving work on Calumet Avenue in Valparaiso between Bullseye Lake Road to Morgan Boulevard. To minimize disruption to surrounding businesses, most of the work will be take place at nighttime, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Construction will begin at Bullseye Lake Road, heading south. The roads will remain open for motorists, with all businesses retaining access.

The $2.6 million project also includes improvements to Roosevelt Road from LaPorte to Calumet and Morgan Boulevard from Lincolnway to Calumet. Work will include structural resurfacing that will substantially extend the life of the roadway, plus pavement markings, curb repairs, sidewalk repairs along the roadway, including ADA ramps to improve accessibility. The improvements, which were delayed by material shortages and utility providers, should be substantially complete by Thanksgiving.

PNW National Hispanic Heritage Month events

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of cultural and academic events. Observed annually in the U.S. between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15, the events will examine the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities. Featuring lectures, discussions, festivals and a movie night, these events will explore different aspects of the Hispanic and Latinx culture and experience. The month-long event will culminate with a Hispanic Heritage Festival from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 15. The festival, scheduled to be held outdoors in Founders Plaza at PNW’s Hammond campus, 2200 169th St., will feature free food, live entertainment and family-friendly activities. Dunes Literary Series to offer live, online readings

The Dunes Literary Series at Indiana University Northwest, a free monthly event hosted by the Department of English featuring the work of Great Lakes writers from Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and Wisconsin, will offer live and online versions of its September reading. Chicago native Chris Glomski and Wisconsin native Nick Demske will join the series to discuss their recent work at 6:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday. The live reading will take place in Hawthorn Hall 104 on campus, 3400 Broadway, Gary. Listeners can link to the event online at https://go.iu.edu/43Mg.

St. Catherine Hospital seeking volunteers

St. Catherine Hospital, 4321 Fir St., East Chicago, is looking for volunteers, 16 years of age and older, who are interested in meeting new people, staying active while providing important services and experiencing the personal satisfaction that comes from helping others. Nominations sought for South Shore Legends

Nominations are now open for a new class of South Shore Legends to add to the Wall of Legends at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond. Legends are individuals, living or dead, who have had a substantial impact with lasting significance, and have lived or worked in Lake, Porter, La Porte, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski or Starke counties. Legends include Dr. William Scholl, boxer Tony Zale, Indiana Dunes Artist Frank Dudley, Indiana’s 20th Civil War Regiment and recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Nobel Prize. Multiple individuals engaged in the same activity can be included in one nomination. Nomination deadline is Oct. 15. PNW to host virtual conference, 5K run/walk

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) will host two upcoming events. “Breaking Bread: COVID-19, Anti-Racism and Critical Conversations on Social Justice,” a virtual conference focusing on current social issues, will broken up into two sessions on two consecutive days: from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 29 and 30.
