A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot in the West Chatham neighborhood on the South Side Tuesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.
About 2:40 p.m., the boy was in front of a business in the 8300 block of South Holland Road when a vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, police said. The boy was shot in the chest and was initially taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him Tuesday night as Jamari Williams. He was a student at Simeon Career Academy, according to the Chicago Teachers Union.
The shooting was less than half a mile from Simeon, 8147 S. Vincennes Ave.
He was later pronounced dead, police said.
The teacher’s union said the death was the second of a Simeon student in 2021, after an 18-year-old student died of COVID-19 complications in March. CTU would work with its foundation’s Quest Center to offer support services for Simeon students and staff, the union said.
“Our collective heart goes out to this student’s family and friends, as well as the Simeon school community, after anther unspeakable tragedy impacting children in our city,” the union said.
No arrests have been made and the shooting is under investigation, police said.
