Area student named Indiana Academic All-Star

Chesterton High School senior Erik Ralph is one of 40 seniors from throughout Indiana to be named a 2017 Indiana Academic All-Star, a program of the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP). He was among the honorees at a recent luncheon at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis. Ralph was selected from a field of 264 outstanding nominees from the state’s private and public accredited schools. Academic All-Star distinction recognizes seniors who excel in the classroom, are actively involved in their schools and communities, and take on leadership roles in those activities.

Local Ivy Tech students win scholarships

Two local students from Ivy Tech Community College have won scholarships from Kappa Beta Delta, the international honor society for business students pursuing associate degrees. Lauren Hutson, a student at Ivy Tech’s Michigan City campus, was awarded the Andrew V. Stevenson Scholarship. Theron Scissom, a student at the college’s Gary campus, received the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Merit Scholarship. Both scholarships require a 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0. Students also must submit a letter of recommendation from a chapter advisor or faculty member and write an autobiographical essay.

Stamp Out Hunger food drive

The National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service will host the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday. To participate, residents are asked to leave a sturdy bag containing non perishable food items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery for letter carriers to collect. Registration underway for City Wide Garage Sale

The Crown Point office of Special Events is now accepting online registrations for the 2017 City Wide Garage Sale to be held June 15-18. Those interested can register at www.crownpoint.in.gov. Registration is free. A downloadable and printable map of all the homes that have registered will be available at www.crownpoint.in.gov on June 14. More information is at 219-662-3290.

Ivy Tech offers summer courses

Registration is currently underway for summer courses at Ivy Tech Community College. Classes begin June 5. Among the offerings: Comic Book Appreciation, Solar System Astronomy, Abnormal Psychology, Human Sexuality, Physics I and Intro to Literature. Many of the course credits transfer to most all public institutions. Schedules, class times and more information are at www.ivytech.edu/northwest.

College Bound Scholarship opportunity

All returning college students and high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the College Bound Scholarship Program, which provides eligible students with up to $10,500 per year toward tuition at the accredited college or university of their choice in Indiana. Application deadline is July 7. Returning students will need to complete an application, provide proof of residency, FAFSA filing and school transcripts. New students will need to complete an application, provide proof of residency and date home was purchased, letter of acceptance to college/university, FAFSA filing, school transcripts, and SAT/ACT score. All returning and new students are required to perform 40 hours of community service each year, scheduled through the College Bound office.
