Why this petition matters

Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer must resign. He does not have the confidence of many people in Pierce County to do his job in a fair, impartial manner.

Troyer has been charged with one count of false reporting, and one count of making a false or misleading statement to a public servant. An independent investigation found that he violated four Pierce County Sheriff Department policies and standards including conduct, community engagement, bias and off-duty intervention.

On Jan. 27, 2021 at 2 a.m., Ed Troyer called 911 and said a man in his neighborhood was threatening to kill him. Based on the information provided, 42 police units were sent because a law enforcement officer's life was supposedly in danger.

It was a lie. When police officers showed up on site, Troyer recanted his statement.

The man Troyer reported is Sedrick Altheimer, a Black newspaper carrier on his morning route. Althheimer was simply doing his job, yet he was confronted and challenged by Troyer. According to Altheimer, Troyer did not identify himself as a police officer.

In the audio of the 911 call, Troyer contradicts himself multiple times, yet his statements were never called into question by the police.

Troyer racially profiled Altheimer, and inappropriately used his position and county resources. His lies put the 24-year-old's safety at risk.

Troyer says he "has moved on" from the incident. We need to send a strong signal that his actions should have consequences and let the Pierce County Council know we believe he is unfit for the position of sheriff and should resign immediately.
