Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Misses practice again
Worthy (illness) missed a third straight practice Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
Worthy landed in an ideal spot for immediate fantasy value when the Chiefs drafted him 28th overall this April, but he hasn't actually had many chances to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes, first missing most of the offseason program with a hamstring injury and now losing a trio of training camp practices to an illness. Worthy still has plenty of time to earn a top-three role at wide receiver, of course, and the competition doesn't look all that tough beyond Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown. To that end, Justin Watson was carted off the field at Wednesday's practice, leaving Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, Mecole Hardman, Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross as the leading candidates for first-team WR reps alongside Rice and Brown.

Chiefs' Justin Watson: Injured at practice
Watson (foot) departed Wednesday's practice early due to an apparent injury, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Watson was injured while catching a pass, then after meeting with trainers was carted into the locker room, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. The severity of his injury remains undisclosed, but any missed time on Watson's part will open up first-team opportunities for receivers lower on Kansas City's depth chart, especially with Xavier Worthy (illness) still missing time. Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman, Skyy Moore, Justyn Ross and Nikko Remigio could all notably benefit from more first-team reps.

Chiefs' Kadarius Toney: Getting backfield work
Toney has been seeing reps at running back early in training camp, Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star reports.
Handling carries isn't completely foreign to Toney, as he's rushed 21 times for 119 yards and one touchdown across four NFL seasons. He also rushed 66 times for 580 yards and two scores in four seasons at Florida before entering the league. With the additions of first-rounder Xavier Worthy and free-agent pickup Hollywood Brown in the offseason to go along with Rashee Rice, Mecole Hardman, Justin Watson and Skyy Moore, wideout snaps may be difficult to come by for Toney. Getting him a look at running back could be a way to get him on the field a bit more, and it would be a way to get the ball in his hands quicker and closer to the line of scrimmage after he struggled mightily to come up with catches last season. Kansas City lost Jerick McKinnon over the offseason and didn't do a whole lot to replace his speed and pass-catching ability at running back. The more Toney can do, the better chance he has of cracking the gameday roster.

Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Third through rotation in drills
Edwards-Helaire was the third running back up during the run period of Tuesday's practice for Kansas City, behind starter Isiah Pacheco and 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
The AFC West powerhouse no longer has Jerick McKinnon on the roster and settled for undrafted rookies as their backfield additions this offseason, but that doesn't mean Edwards-Helaire is a lock for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Even if he does reprise that role, as many expect, CEH could end up limited to passing-down situations while another back serves as Pacheco's backup on early downs and in short-yardage situations. Kansas City re-signed Edwards-Helaire in March on a one-year, $1.7 million contract that includes $1.325 guaranteed -- considerably less than the average annual value on his rookie contract after the team selected him 32nd overall in the 2020 Draft.

Chiefs' Deneric Prince: Rotates in ahead of Edwards-Helaire
Prince was the second Kansas City running back to take a carry during Tuesday's run period, behind only Isiah Pacheco, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
Prince spent most of 2023 on the team's practice squad after going undrafted in the spring, with his two regular-season appearances yielding 15 snaps on special teams. He has another shot to earn a backup role, as the defending Super Bowl champions didn't do much to reinforce their backfield behind Pacheco this offseason, merely re-signing Clyde Edwards-Helaire and bringing in more undrafted rookies. Prince probably isn't ahead of Edwards-Helaire on the depth chart but might be viewed as a better fit for early downs and/or short-yardage situations if Pacheco were to miss time with an injury.

Chiefs' Jaden Hicks: Seeing first-team work
Hicks was working with the Chiefs' first-team defense Monday with Justin Reid (quadriceps) on the team's NFI list, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
The rookie safety out of Washington State has received a vote of confidence from his coaching staff, seeing first-team snaps while Reid recovers from his quadriceps injury. Hicks isn't expected to have a big defensive role during Kansas City's 2024 campaign, but he could be the next man up at safety if Reid or Bryan Cook go down at some point this season.

Chiefs' Bryan Cook: Past ankle issue
Cook (ankle) was spotted working with the Chiefs' first-team defense Monday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
The 2022 second-round pick out of Cincinnati sustained a season-ending ankle injury during Kansas City's Week 13 loss to the Packers, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. Cook started all 12 games he appeared in last season, recording 42 total tackles and two passes defended, including one interception. The 24-year-old is expected to remain one of the Chiefs' top safeties heading into their 2024 campaign.

Chiefs' Rashee Rice: Still no word on league discipline
Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said Monday the team hasn't yet held any discussions with the NFL over a possible suspension for Rice, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Rice is presumably facing a multi-game suspension for his involvement in a high-speed, six-car crash in April in which he was charged with aggravated assault, collision involving serious bodily injury and collision involving injury. He was also allegedly involved in an assault in a nightclub in May, per Toluwani Osibamowo of KCUR.org. Though no charges were filed in the latter incident, Rice could still be subject to related league discipline. The second-year wideout was a full participant in offseason activities for the Chiefs, and given that the NFL typically allows legal processes to play out in full before assigning punishments, clarity on Rice's potential suspension may not be immediately forthcoming.

Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Dealing with illness
Worthy (illness) is not practicing Monday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
Worthy missed OTAs and mandatory minicamp due to a hamstring injury before retaking the practice field last week, and though he's now dealing with an illness, there's no indication the rookie first-round pick will be sidelined long. He got off to a quick start, connecting with quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a deep touchdown during Sunday's practice. Once he's back on the field, Worthy will resume competing for first-team reps alongside Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown.

Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Displays clean bill of health
Edwards-Helaire passed his physical Sunday after the Chiefs placed him on the active/non-football illness list Saturday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Veterans reported to Kansas City's training camp Saturday, and after showing up with some sort of ailment, Edwards-Helaire was able to join his teammates on the practice field one day later. He's thus slated to serve as the primary backup to starting running back Isiah Pacheco in the coming campaign, which amounted to 88 touches in 10 regular-season games in 2022 and 87 touches in 15 such contests last season.
