  • Nationals' Jesse Winker: Getting day off versus LHP

Winker isn't in Washington's lineup Saturday against the Reds.

Winker and his .667 OPS against southpaws will take a seat on the bench to begin Saturday's game as left-hander Nick Lodolo starts on the mound for Cincinnati. Harold Ramirez will fill in as the Nationals' DH and bat fourth.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Idle against lefty

Garcia isn't in the Nationals' lineup for Saturday's game against Cincinnati.

The lefty-hitting Garcia will take a seat Saturday as the lefty-throwing Nick Lodolo prepares to start on the bump for the Reds. Ildemaro Vargas will take over at the keystone and bat sixth.

  • Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Resting Saturday

Ruiz isn't in the Nationals' lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds.

Ruiz will take a seat Saturday after hitting his seventh home run of the season during Friday's victory. In his place, Riley Adams will start behind the dish and bat fifth.

  • Nationals' Lane Thomas: Pilfers 24th bag

Thomas went 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Reds.

The outfielder continues to do damage on the basepaths in July. Thomas is up to 24 steals on the season, and seven of them have come in his last 12 games -- a stretch in which he's batting .319 (15-for-47). His homer drought stands at 24 games, however, something which won't help the Nationals extract maximum value for the 28-year-old if they elect to move him at the trade deadline.

  • Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Swats seventh homer

Ruiz went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's win over the Reds.

The backstop took Frankie Montas deep in the fourth inning, capping a four-run outburst for the Nationals that put them in the lead for good. Ruiz has seven homers on the season, but three of them have come in his last eight games -- a stretch in which he's batting .300 (9-for-30) with two doubles, six runs and eight RBI.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Two steals in Friday's win

Young went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two stolen bases in Friday's win over the Reds.

The Nationals ran wild on Tyler Stephenson and Cincy's pitching staff, going 5-for-5 in steal attempts on the night. Young had only one stolen base and zero multi-hit performances over his last 16 games before the All-Star break, a stretch in which he slashed a rough .151/.237/.170, but his defense in center field has kept him in the lineup despite his struggles at the plate.

  • Nationals' Jesse Winker: Swipes two more bags

Winker went 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Friday's 8-5 win over the Reds.

With his two steals Friday, Winker's up to 14 stolen bases on the year -- the 30-year-old outfielder hadn't recorded more than one stolen base in any of his previous seven campaigns. While Winker went just 2-for-16 in his six games prior to the All-Star break, he's had a strong bounce-back campaign overall in Washington, slashing .263/.38/.434 with 11 homers, 43 RBI and 49 runs scored.

  • Nationals' Juan Yepez: Two more hits, first homer

Yepez went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a second run scored in Friday's 8-5 win over Cincinnati.

Yepez took Frankie Montas deep in the third inning, driving a two-strike pitch over the left-field fence to extend Washington's lead to 7-1. It's the first homer of the year for Yepez, though he's swung the bat well since he was called up on July 5 -- the outfielder has at least one hit in all 11 games he's appeared in. Overall, Yepez is slashing an eye-popping .390/.468/.610 with six RBI and eight runs scored across 47 plate appearances as he continues to make a case for an everyday role.

  • Nationals' Kyle Finnegan: Notches final out for 26th save

Finnegan earned the save in Friday's 8-5 win over the Reds, allowing one walk before recording the final out.

It didn't appear that Finnegan would be needed Friday, as the Nationals carried an 8-1 lead into the ninth. However, Jose Ferrer and Derek Law would combine to allow four runs in the frame, forcing the Nats to turn to Finnegan with two outs. The right-hander would issue a walk before ultimately getting Elly De La Cruz to ground out to seal an 8-5 win. The 32-year-old Finnegan has been excellent for Washington this year -- he's up to 26 saves, third-most in the league, with a 2.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB across 40.2 innings.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Grabs second win

Corbin (2-9) earned the win Friday over the Reds, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six over six innings.

Corbin was sharp Friday, holding Cincinnati to a lone third-inning run en route to his first win since May 10. The 35-year-old southpaw had struggled in four starts prior to the All-Star break, allowing 14 runs over 23 innings. Overall, Corbin sports a 5.35 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP and 79:36 K:BB through 20 starts (111 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with San Diego next week in his next outing.

  • Nationals' Joey Gallo: Could resume running next week

Gallo (hamstring) could begin a running program next week, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Gallo resumed baseball activities earlier this month, but running will be the big test as he comes back from a strained left hamstring that has sidelined him since June 11. He will require a rehab assignment before returning and wouldn't seem to be guaranteed anything in regards to playing time upon his activation.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Starting Friday

Garcia (shoulder) is batting sixth and playing second base Friday against the Reds.

Garcia was scratched from Sunday's game with left shoulder soreness but is back in the lineup as expected coming out of the All-Star break. The second baseman was on a five-game hit streak before the break, going 7-for-18 with two doubles and a solo home run during that stretch.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Set for season-ending UCL surgery

Gray will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday in Texas to repair a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

It's not yet clear whether Gray will need a full Tommy John surgery, an internal brace procedure or a combination of the two, but either way, he'll be shut down for the 2024 season and appears likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2025 campaign. Gray was limited to just two starts this season before getting hurt, allowing 13 runs over 8.1 innings.

  • Nationals' Amos Willingham: Optioned to Triple-A

The Nationals optioned Willingham to Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

He made one appearance during his brief time with the big club, allowing two runs over an inning of work. Willingham is being cleared out to make room for Jose Ferrer in the Nationals' bullpen.

  • Nationals' Jose Ferrer: Rejoins bullpen

The Nationals activated Ferrer (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Friday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Ferrer has been out all season with a strain of the teres major muscle in his left shoulder. He will give the team a second left-hander in the bullpen behind Robert Garcia, something the Nationals have not had in 2024 until now.

  • Nationals' Trevor Williams: Limited to playing catch

Williams (elbow) resumed playing catch from 60 feet earlier this month but remains without a clear timeline for a return from the 15-day injured list, MLB.com reports.

Before landing on the IL on June 4 with a right flexor muscle strain, Williams had been a pleasant surprise for the Nationals this season with a 5-0 record, 2.22 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 47:16 K:BB in 56.2 innings. While the strong form he displayed prior to getting hurt should be enough for him to reclaim a rotation spot once he's activated from the IL, Williams' return still looks to be multiple weeks down the road. He'll eventually need to resume throwing off a mound and facing hitters in live batting practice before embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being reinstated from the IL.

  • Nationals' Dylan Crews: On track for 2024 debut

Crews seems likely to make his big-league debut before the end of the season, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Moved up to Triple-A Rochester on June 17, Crews hasn't exactly dominated the highest level of the minors yet, slashing .253/.306/.407 through 20 games with three homers, five steals and a 19.4 percent strikeout rate that's actually an improvement on his 23.8 percent mark at Double-A Harrisburg. The second overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft has flashed his upside though, and the Nationals are likely to want him to get his feet wet in the majors in September ahead of a probable starting job in 2025. Should Lane Thomas be shipped out at the trade deadline, it could open up a spot in the big-league outfield for Crews by early August, but the team may also want to keep his rookie status intact for next year in the hopes he earns the Nationals a bonus draft pick.
