  • Rangers' Evan Carter: Set for batting practice

Carter (back) will take batting practice on the field at Globe Life Field on Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Carter has been out since May 28 while dealing with a lower-back stress reaction, but he appears to be progressing in the right direction. If he can escape the session unscathed Tuesday, the outfielder will likely gear up for some sort of rehab assignment before he'd potentially be activated from the 10-day injured list down the road.

  • Rangers' Travis Jankowski: Sitting Saturday

Jankowski is not in the starting lineup Saturday against Baltimore.

Jankowski will get a day off after he went 0-for-1 with a walk in Friday's 9-1 loss. Justin Foscue was called up from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday and he'll take over at designated hitter, batting eighth versus the Orioles.

  • Rangers' Jonah Heim: Breather Saturday

Heim is not in the starting lineup against the Orioles on Saturday.

Heim will get a day off after he went 0-for-4 in Friday's 9-1 loss. Andrew Knizner will take over behind the plate and bat ninth versus Baltimore.

  • Rangers' Dane Dunning: Rehab transferred to Triple-A

Dunning (shoulder) had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.

Dunning has been on the 15-day injured list since July 5 as a result of right shoulder soreness, but he's now one step closer to his return to the big leagues. The right-hander pitched two scoreless innings in his only rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Sunday and it's possible that Dunning will only need one outing with Round Rock before being activated from the IL.

  • Rangers' Derek Hill: Designated for assignment

Hill was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Saturday.

Hill will now be placed on waivers and if he goes unclaimed, he'll likely report to Triple-A Round Rock. The 28-year-old compiled a .256 average with three home runs, five RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases over 43 at-bats after being called up to the major-league roster May 21.

  • Rangers' Justin Foscue: Called up Saturday

Foscue was called up from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.

Foscue will make his return to the big leagues after missing two months with an oblique injury and then being optioned to Triple-A on June 20 upon activation from the 60-day injured list. The 25-year-old produced a .242 average with three home runs, 13 RBI, 13 runs scored and a stolen base over 19 games with Round Rock after his activation. Foscue will provide the Rangers with a depth option behind Marcus Semien at second base and Josh Smith a third base on the major-league roster with Texas.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Homers in loss

Lowe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-1 loss to Baltimore.

Lowe's second-inning blast was all the Rangers could muster. It was his seventh home run of the season and first extra-base hit in 12 contests. Lowe stumbled to finish the first half, going 1-for-17 over the five games leading into the All-Star break, so the home run is a positive sign. He's generally been a more productive hitter during the second half of seasons, posting an .839 OPS following the All-Star break compared to .755 prior to it for his career.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Crushed for six runs

Eovaldi (6-4) yielded six runs on eight hits over five innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Orioles.

Eovaldi got off to a rocky start, coughing up a pair of two-run homers in the first inning. He kept Baltimore off the board for a few frames before Anthony Santander joined the party with a two-run shot in the fifth. Eovaldi had given up three homers over his previous four outings before Friday's unsightly outing. On the bright side, he has now gone four straight starts without issuing a free pass. Eovaldi will carry a 3.36 ERA into his next outing, which lines up to come at home against the White Sox.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Completes another bullpen

DeGrom (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday and mixed in some sliders, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Friday marked deGrom's third bullpen session, but previously he had been limited to fastballs and changeups. It's unclear when the 35-year-old will come off the IL, but considering he'll likely need multiple rehab appearances, deGrom shouldn't be expected to make his season debut until some time in August.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Starting rehab stint

Bradford (ribs) reported to the Rangers' Arizona Complex League affiliate Friday to begin a rehab assignment, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

The left-hander has been sidelined by a lower-back strain and stress fracture in his rib since mid-April but has now been cleared for game action. Manager Bruce Bochy said in early July that Bradford was likely to rejoin the Rangers as a reliever, so he may not require a lengthy rehab assignment.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Throwing for Round Rock

Mahle (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Mahle has bounced around during his minor-league rehab assignment, making appearances with Round Rock, Double-A Frisco and the Rangers' Arizona Complex League affiliate. He'll return to Round Rock for his fourth outing after completing 2.2 innings in his previous start. Mahle's recovery from Tommy John surgery is close to complete, and he could be back with the Rangers in early August.

  • Rangers' Winston Santos: Excels in second Double-A start

Santos gave up one unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven over five innings in his most recent start for Double-A Frisco on July 5.

Santos gave up five earned runs in his first Double-A start June 28, but he righted the ship in his second start for the RoughRiders. He also tossed a scoreless inning in the Futures Game, giving up a hit while striking out a batter and walking one. Santos leaned on a mid-90s four-seam fastball, a slider and a cutter during the Futures Game, and he has reportedly thrown a changeup in the past. The 6-foot righty logged a 2.80 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 64.1 innings over 12 starts for High-A Hickory before getting promoted to Double-A on June 25.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Strikes out five in ACL start

Mahle (elbow) struck out five and allowed one hit and one walk over 2.2 scoreless innings during his rehab start Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Mahle had made his previous two rehab starts at Double-A Frisco, but he shifted his assignment to the ACL this week while all of the Rangers' full-season affiliates are off due to the All-Star break. The right-hander has looked strong thus far in his first three minor-league outings coming back from his May 2023 Tommy John surgery. He has yet to let in a run over 6.2 innings and built his pitch count up to 45 on Monday. Mahle will likely shift his assignment back to a higher-level affiliate over the weekend and will presumably need at least two or three more minor-league outings to get fully stretched out before he becomes a realistic option for the Rangers' rotation.

  • Rangers' Paulino Santana: Everything except power in DSL

Santana is slashing .292/.468/.377 with zero home runs and 15 steals in 29 games in the Dominican Summer League.

Santana's approach and command of the strike zone look very good on paper (21.3-percent walk rate, 16.3-percent strikeout rate) for a high-pedigree 17-year-old in the DSL, and his speed on the bases has been as advertised. However, his lack of power in a very hitter-friendly league does not match preseason expectations. It's tough to say whether he's being more patient or passive, but he's been pulling the ball (54.4 Pull%) and doing an OK job getting the ball in the air (43.0 GB%) so it's possible something starts to click in the power department sooner than later.
