  • Cardinals' Kyle Leahy: Serving as 27th man

Leahy is with the Cardinals and will be the team's 27th player for the nightcap of a doubleheader against Atlanta, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Leahy will give the Cardinals and additional bullpen arm for Game 2 after St. Louis lost 3-2 in 10 innings during the matinee. Leahy has thrown 30.1 big-league innings with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He'll likely be sent back to Memphis following the contest.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Idle for Game 1

Gorman isn't in the Cardinals' lineup for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus Atlanta.

Gorman will take a seat to begin Saturday's festivities and will likely be back in the lineup for the nightcap. His absence in the early game will move Brendan Donovan to second base while Alec Burleson starts in left field, moving Willson Contreras into the DH spot with Pedro Pages at catcher.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: St. Louis-Atlanta postponed Friday

Gray and the Cardinals won't face Atlanta on Friday, as the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

Friday's contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, and Gray will get the nod to start the nightcap, per John Denton of MLB.com. The 34-year-old righty owns a 3.34 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through 99.2 innings on the season, though he has given up 11 earned runs over 16.1 innings across his last three starts.

  • Cardinals' Riley O'Brien: Starting rehab assignment

O'Brien (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

O'Brien has been shelved since Opening Day due to a strained forearm but has finally been cleared for a rehab stint The 29-year-old has completed three live batting practice sessions and could rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen before the end of July.

  • Cardinals' Steven Matz: Throwing off mound Saturday

Matz (back) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Saturday will mark the second time Matz has thrown off a mound since he moved to the 60-day IL in late June. If he's able to get through his next session without any issues, the Cardinals may clear him to face live hitters before sending him back on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 33-year-old southpaw has been on the injured list since May 3 due to a lower-back strain, and his recovery has been slowed by a setback he suffered in June.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Edman: Return not imminent

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Sunday that Edman (wrist) will need to be ready to play all his defensive positions and have his proper timing at the plate before completing his minor-league rehab assignment and being activated from the 60-day injured list, Wilson Truong of KMOX News Radio reports.

The 29-year-old began a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield last week but has exclusively played at designated hitter in his first four games, and Edman will need to see significant action in the field before joining the Cardinals. He has yet to see major-league action this season while recovering from offseason wrist surgery, and his rehab has been bumpy due to setbacks and other minor injuries. Given the length of his absence, Edman will likely need a couple more weeks in the minors to get up to speed, putting him on track to return in late July or early August.

  • Cardinals' Michael Siani: Back in action

Siani (elbow) is batting ninth and playing center field Friday against Atlanta.

Siani was hit by a pitch in the elbow during the first game of a doubleheader Saturday and didn't play in the nightcap, or the Cardinals' final game before the All-Star break Sunday. He's good to go after the four days of rest, filling his usual spot in center field. Siani is slashing .227/.263/.304 across 214 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Tink Hence: Throws side session

Hence (undisclosed) threw a side session last weekend, but did not attend the Futures Game as he opted to focus on getting healthy and returning to action for Double-A Springfield, KY3 News reports.

He exited a June 5 start with what the Cardinals labeled as "cramping" and then pitched one inning June 23, but he has never been placed on the injured list despite throwing just three innings since the start of June. As an undersized, hard-throwing 21-year-old, Hence is at a high risk of arm injuries, so it makes sense for he and the team to focus on following the rehab process rather than appearing in the Futures Game. On the season, Hence had a 3.29 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 54.2 innings. He may have worn down last season, as he logged much worse stats across the board in the second half, although that also coincided with him getting bumped up to Double-A.

  • Cardinals' Ryan Helsley: Replaced on All-Star roster

Helsley was replaced Monday on the National League All-Star Game roster with Nationals reliever Kyle Finnegan.

Per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Helsley said that he wasn't likely to pitch in Tuesday's All-Star Game and instead wished to get rest over the All-Star break. The 29-year-old closer confirmed he was healthy and is merely monitoring his workload, having already appeared in 41 games and thrown 42 innings this season. Helsley's career high in appearances is 54, and he hasn't pitched more than 64.2 innings in any individual season.

  • Cardinals' Braden Davis: Lands with Red Birds

The Cardinals have selected Davis with the 142nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Davis shifted from relief to a starting role in college, though his ultimate home as a pro will likely be in the bullpen. He stands at just 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds and thus lacks the prototypical size of a starter. Davis boasts a plus changeup that he relies on heavily, but his fastball lacks the velocity for him to stick in a high-leverage role.

  • Cardinals' Ryan Campos: Headed to St. Louis

The Cardinals have selected Campos with the 109th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The Arizona State product was a Buster Posey Award semi-finalist as a sophomore in 2023, and Campos is an on-base machine at the plate, combining excellent contact rates with strong plate discipline. His power took a step forward in 2024 as well, and while he doesn't have outstanding physical tools behind the plate, he's an adequate defensive catcher due to his baseball IQ. His bat will likely need to continue to progress for Campos to emerge as more than a backup option in the majors.

  • Cardinals' Brian Holiday: Lands in St. Louis

The Cardinals have selected Holiday with the 80th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

After racking up 141 strikeouts over 88 innings in the JUCO ranks in 2023, Holiday made the jump to Division I with Oklahoma State in 2024 and continued to make bats miss with 128 punchouts over 113 innings. Though he leans on a modest lower-90s fastball, the offering carries well and plays up due to his ability to consistently command it. He complements the heater with a mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup, but neither offering is viewed as a plus pitch.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Slips to seventh overall

The Cardinals have selected Wetherholt with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A hamstring issue limited Wetherholt to 36 games as a junior at West Virginia, but he has been extremely productive all three years in the Big 12 and during brief stints in summer leagues, including by logging a .978 OPS in eight Cape Cod League games last summer. Wetherholt is a 5-foot-10 middle infielder who most scouts expect to end up at the keystone but who has shown enough flashes at shortstop that he could be given a chance to stick there initially in pro ball. He is a plus runner and went 42-for-50 on stolen-base attempts over the past two seasons. His calling card, however, is a potential 70-grade hit tool that leads this draft class. The lefty-hitting Wetherholt's contact and strikeout rates have been elite en route to a career .370 average with the Mountaineers. He's shown burgeoning power to all fields, tallying 24 homers in 91 games over the past two years, and profiles as a No. 2 hitter in the majors.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Three hits, steal in loss

Donovan went 3-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 8-3 loss to the Cubs.

Donovan has six multi-hit efforts over 13 games in July, going 18-for-52 (.346) in that span. The steal was his first since June 26 and his third of the campaign. The 27-year-old is up to a .276/.345/.411 slash line with eight home runs, 45 RBI, 43 runs scored, 22 doubles and one triple over 91 contests this season. Donovan has primarily played in left field, though he occasionally spells Nolan Gorman at second base or Nolan Arenado at third.
