Top Twins News

  • Twins' Byron Buxton: Back in lineup Saturday

Buxton is starting in center field and batting third Saturday versus the Brewers.

Buxton was absent from the Twins' lineup for the team's final two games prior to the All-Star break, but he'll be back in action Saturday. A notoriously volatile hitter, Buxton has been on a tear since early June, batting .376 with six home runs, 22 RBI, 25 runs scored and three stolen bases over his last 101 at-bats. He'll look to keep up the hot streak as Minnesota officially kicks off the "second half" of their season against Milwaukee.

  • Twins' Edouard Julien: Joins Twins, starting Saturday

Julien was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. He'll bat ninth and play second base against the Brewers.

With Carlos Correa (foot) placed on the injured list, the Twins had a significant need for middle infield depth, and opted to bring Julien up to the big-league roster. The 25-year-old has 194 plate appearances with Minnesota this season, slashing .207/.309/.367 with seven home runs and six stolen bases.

  • Twins' Austin Martin: Activated from 10-day IL

Martin (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday.

Martin will return to the big-league roster after a minimum stay on the IL with a strained right oblique. Prior to getting hurt, the outfielder had seen his playing time dwindle greatly and it's unclear if he has a path to more consistent usage moving forward.

  • Twins' Chris Paddack: Placed on 15-day IL

Paddack was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain Saturday.

Paddack last pitched Sunday against the Giants, surrendering two runs (one earned) over five innings, potentially picking up a forearm injury in the process. The right-hander could be set for an extended absence as a result of the injury being to his throwing arm, but only time will tell. It's unclear who will replace Paddack in Minnesota's starting rotation, but in the meantime, Austin Martin (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, filling in the hole on the major-league roster.

  • Twins' Carlos Correa: Placed on 10-day IL

Correa (heel) was placed on the 10-day injured list with right plantar fasciitis on Saturday, retroactive to July 16.

Correa missed the Twins' final two games before the All-Star break with a heel injury, but it wasn't considered to be particularly serious at the time. He will now be forced to miss at least the the next 10 games, but plantar fasciitis can be a very tricky situation, so it's unclear if the shortstop will be able to return when first eligible. Correa has been on a tear since the beginning of June, batting .360 with nine home runs, 28 RBI and 29 runs scored over 36 contests, so his absence is a tough pill to swallow for fantasy managers. In a corresponding move, Edouard Julien was called up from Triple-A St. Paul to replace Correa in Minnesota's infield Saturday.

  • Twins' Darren Bowen: Comes off IL

Bowen (elbow) was reinstated from Double-A Cedar Rapids' 7-day injured list and recorded just one out while allowing six earned runs on six hits and one walk in a July 12 loss to Beloit.

Bowen started for Cedar Rapids in his return from a month-long absence due to a right elbow sprain, but he tossed just 28 pitches before being lifted from the game after being knocked around by the Beloit lineup. Despite Bowen's rough showing in his return, the Twins haven't indicated that he suffered any setbacks with his elbow, so he should be ready to make his next turn through the rotation coming out of the All-Star break. Bowen holds a 6.23 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB in 43.1 innings with Cedar Rapids on the season.

  • Twins' Austin Brice: Calls end to playing career

Brice announced Wednesday via social media that he has retired from professional baseball.

The 32-year-old's announcement came two days after Triple-A St. Paul placed him on its voluntarily retired list. The right-hander didn't see any big-league action this season between stints in the Phillies and Twins organizations and turned in an ugly 12.00 ERA over 15 innings between the Triple-A and Double-A levels. Brice previously made 144 appearances in the majors from 2016 through 2022, logging a 5.12 ERA while collecting four wins and 16 holds over 168.2 innings across stops with the Marlins, Reds, Red Sox and Pirates.

  • Twins' Zack Weiss: Activated and outrighted

The Twins activated Weiss (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday and outrighted him to Triple-A St. Paul, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Weiss has been out all season with a teres major strain in his right shoulder. He's healthy now, after having allowed six runs with an 8:3 K:BB over eight innings during his rehab assignment, which included stops at three affiliates. The Twins didn't have room on Weiss from the 40-man roster, but he'll remain in the organization as bullpen depth at St. Paul.

  • Twins' Carlos Correa: Not playing in All-Star Game

Correa (heel) was removed Monday from the American League All-Star Game roster and was replaced by the Rangers' Corey Seager, the Associated Press reports.

Though Correa is still expected to attend All-Star festivities in Arlington, Texas this week, his removal from the roster comes as little surprise after he missed the Twins' final two games before the break due to plantar fasciitis in his right heel. Dan Hayes of The Athletic relays that Correa's latest case of plantar fasciitis isn't as severe as his bout with the injury to his left foot during 2023 season, but it's not yet clear whether Correa will be back in action when the Twins return to action Saturday versus the Brewers.

  • Twins' Zebby Matthews: Promoted to Triple-A

The Twins have promoted Matthews from Double-A Wichita to Triple-A St. Paul, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

It will be his third level this season following a dominating run between Wichita and High-A Cedar Rapids that saw him post a 1.85 ERA and 91:6 K:BB over 78 innings. The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the Twins' better pitching prospects.

  • Twins' Caleb Boushley: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Twins outrighted Boushley to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Boushley was removed from the 40-man roster over the weekend but has cleared waivers and will stick around in the organization. The 30-year-old has spent virtually all of 2024 at St. Paul, where he holds a 4.68 ERA in 16 starts.

  • Twins' Rylan Bannon: Dealt to Minnesota

The Twins acquired Bannon from the Mets on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old journeyman didn't earn a call-up to the Mets before the All-Star break, despite getting on base at a .392 clip while slugging 15 home runs and seven stolen bases across 342 plate appearances at Triple-A Syracuse. The banged-up Twins could have a greater need for a utility player like Bannon, though he'll most likely report to Triple-A St. Paul to begin his stint with a new organization.

  • Twins' Jaime Ferrer: Nabbed by Twins in fourth round

The Twins have selected Ferrer with the 126th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Ferrer has consistently hit for average and reached base at a strong clip throughout his collegiate career at Florida State and even in the Cape Cod League. He took a step forward with his power production in 2024 by popping 22 homers, and translating that to pro ball will be the key to him carving out a role at a corner outfield position.

  • Twins' Caden Kendle: Nabbed by Twins

The Twins have selected Kendle with the 159th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Kendle was taken in the 10th round last year but improved his stock by returning to UC Irvine. He hit .387/.479/.590 this spring with a nice combination of power and speed. At 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, the muscular Kendle gets some Tyler O'Neill body comps.

  • Twins' Khadim Diaw: Goes to Minnesota in Round 3

The Twins have selected Diaw with the 96th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

While Diaw's arm strength and agility should allow him to begin his professional career at catcher, he lacks extensive experience at the position and could eventually shift to the outfield if he can't stick behind the dish. Regardless, Diaw's bat will be his main draw rather than his defense, as the 21-year-old boasts solid bat-to-ball skills and is able to generate a modicum of pop from his 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame.

  • Twins' Dasan Hill: Drafted by Twins

The Twins have selected Hill with the 69th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

An uber-projectable prep lefty out of Texas, Hill is listed at 6-foot-5, 165 pounds, so he'll need to get to work on adding muscle to his frame. He already sits in the low-90s with his fastball (touches 96 mph) while showcasing two high-quality breaking balls, but this jump in stuff happened only recently after a growth spurt.
