Marlins' Anthony Bender: Nabs fourth win Friday
Bender (4-2) was credited with the win Friday after giving up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The right-hander took over for Edward Cabrera in the top of the fifth with the Marlins ahead 4-2 and wound up being the pitcher of record, despite serving up a double to Jose Iglesias in the sixth ahead of Jeff McNeil's second homer of the night. Bender has been one of the Marlins' most effective relievers over the last couple months, and since the beginning of June he's posted a 1.84 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB through 14.2 innings while collecting three wins and three holds in 19 appearances. Should Tanner Scott get dealt ahead of the trade deadline, Bender could find himself in the ninth-inning mix for Miami.

Marlins' Jazz Chisholm: Swipes 19th bag
Chisholm went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Mets.
With trade rumors swirling around him, Chisholm has been having a little trouble staying focused at the plate. The 26-year-old has a .185/.290/.296 slash line through 13 games in July with two homers, three RBI and six runs, but he's kept his fantasy value afloat by adding five steals, giving him 19 on the season -- just four short of the career-high 23 he pilfered in 2021.

Marlins' Jake Burger: Launches 11th homer
Burger went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Friday's win over the Mets.
The 28-year-old rapped both his extra-base hits off southpaw Sean Manaea, including a solo shot in the fifth inning. Burger appears to be finding his power stroke in July, slashing .292/.333/.583 over 12 games with four of his 11 homers on the season.

Marlins' Emmanuel Rivera: Absent from lineup
Rivera isn't in the Marlins' lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets.
Rivera went 0-for-1 with two walks and a sac fly during Friday's win in the series opener, and he'll now get a chance to rest Saturday. His absence will move Jake Burger to third base while Josh Bell starts at first, opening up the DH role for Bryan De La Cruz with Nick Gordon starting in left field.

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Swipes bag in return
Lopez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-4 win over the Mets.
The 25-year-old infielder had been sidelined since June 30 with lower-back inflammation, but Lopez looked fully recovered in his return to the lineup. He got the start at second base Friday and batted fifth, and Lopez will likely remain at the keystone the rest of the year as the Marlins let him settle in next to shortstop Xavier Edwards as their potential double-play combo of the present and future.

Marlins' Tanner Scott: Secures 15th save
Scott struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings Friday to record his 15th save of the season in a 6-4 win over the Mets.
The lefty fired 14 of 18 pitches for strikes as he carved up the top of New York's order. Any save for Scott could be his last in a Marlins uniform as trade rumors swirl around the pending free agent, and he's only helped his market value with a 13-appearance scoreless streak that dates back to June 13 -- a stretch in which he's converted all seven of his save chances while giving up only four hits with a 15:5 K:BB in 13.2 innings.

Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Control issues in no-decision
Cabrera came away with a no-decision in Friday's 6-4 win over the Mets, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out one.
The right-hander got only 40 of his 81 pitches over the plate, and even though the Marlins staked him to a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning, Cabrera couldn't stick around long enough to qualify for a win. He had posted an 11:1 K:BB in his last two starts before the All-Star break, but the time off appears to have cost Cabrera his feel for the strike zone. He also got taken deep by Jeff McNeil on Friday, and Cabrera's served up nine homers in only 33 innings this season, contributing to his bloated 7.36 ERA and 1.67 WHIP despite a career-high 28.1 percent strikeout rate. He remains a volatile fantasy option heading into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Orioles.

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Activated and back in lineup
The Marlins activated Lopez (back) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Lopez has missed much of July with a back injury but is ready to roll after playing a few rehab games. He is starting at second base and batting fifth for the Marlins in Friday's series opener versus the Mets.

Marlins' PJ Morlando: Agrees to terms with Miami
Morlando signed with the Marlins on Friday, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.
Morlando will receive a signing bonus of $3.4 million, which is a sizable chunk under the assigned slot value for the No. 16 pick of $4.7 million. The 19-year-old had arguably the best raw power of any high schooler in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, but it rarely showed up as a senior due to a swing change. Morlando has significant upside, but it will likely take him a while to develop.

Marlins' Dane Myers: Placed on 10-day IL
Myers (ankle) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Myers was diagnosed with a fractured left ankle Saturday and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks, so Thursday's move to the IL comes as no surprise. The Marlins will likely promote someone to provide outfield depth prior to Friday's game against the Mets.

Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Taking part in strengthening work
Luzardo (back) has been participating in bike workouts and working on forearm and shoulder strengthening in recent weeks, MLB.com reports.
While Luzardo hasn't been shut down from physical activity since landing on the injured list June 22 with a lumbar stress reaction, he's yet to resume throwing after nearly a month. The Marlins transferred him to the 60-day injured list a day after placing him on the 15-day IL, so the club is already preparing for his absence to extend into the second half of August. A clearer target date for his return won't be available until he's ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

Marlins' Josh Simpson: Throwing off mound
Simpson (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session July 9, MLB.com reports.
Simpson opened the season on the injured list after being diagnosed with left elbow neuritis, but he appeared to be tracking toward a brief stay on the shelf. However, after making a rehab appearance April 6, Simpson incurred a setback and ultimately underwent surgery later that month. Nearly three months later, Simpson is finally starting to make some real progress in the recovery process as he conducts his rehab at the Marlins' facility in Jupiter, Fla. He could be cleared to start facing hitters in live batting practice shortly after the All-Star break.

Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Begins rehab process
Garrett is considered asymptomatic while he continues to rehab his strained left forearm at the Marlins' facility in Jupiter, Fla., MLB.com reports.
Garrett -- who was placed on the injured list June 23 -- is focused on strengthening his forearm for now before he kicks off a throwing program. The southpaw still looks to be multiple weeks away from a return, and given their place in the standings, the 33-63 Marlins are in no hurry to bring Garrett back.

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Rehabs at Triple-A over weekend
Lopez (back) began a rehab assignment last weekend at Triple-A Jacksonville, appearing in three games while going 2-for-12 with a double and a run scored.
Lopez hasn't moved his rehab assignment to the rookie-level Florida Complex League while all of the Marlins' full-season affiliates are in the midst of their All-Star break, but so long as he didn't experience any setbacks with his back this past weekend, he could be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when Miami opens its second-half schedule Friday versus the Mets. Before being placed on the shelf July 4 with lower-back inflammation, Lopez slashed .252/.279/.350 with three home runs and six stolen bases across 174 plate appearances. Lopez could take back primary starting duties at second base from Vidal Brujan once he's activated.

Marlins' Max Meyer: Might be up next week
The Marlins could wait until at least Sunday to recall Meyer from Triple-A Jacksonville, as they would gain an extra year of club control by doing so, Ely Sussman of FishonFirst.com reports.
After throwing five-plus innings in three big-league starts to begin the season, Meyer was optioned to Jacksonville on April 15 and had been capped at four innings or less in his first 10 starts for the affiliate. He threw a minor-league season-high six innings for Jacksonville on July 9, then logged five scoreless frames July 14, so he looks to be fully stretched out at this point. Given the incentives in place, it's quite possible Meyer rejoins the big-league rotation for good next week.
