  • Astros' Victor Caratini: Could join Astros Monday

Caratini (hip) will play in rehab games at Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday and Sunday before joining the Astros on Monday in Oakland, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The Astros will begin a three-game set against the Athletics on Monday and Caratini is on track to return from his rehab assignment for the start of the series. The catcher has been recovering from a strained left hip and will have completed five rehab games before joining the big-league club. Cesar Salazar will likely be optioned once Caratini is activated.

  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Throws 15 pitches

Garcia (elbow) threw 15 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Garcia's threw 15 pitches as part of his first mound work since July 4. While Saturday's session was the first step toward resuming his rehab assignment, Garcia will likely have to complete additional bullpens before being shipped out. The 27-year-old is 14 months into his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

  • Astros' Justin Verlander: Throws another bullpen

Verlander threw 40 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Verlander is recovering from a neck injury that has sidelined him since June 18, but he's thrown a pair of bullpen sessions in the last week and was stretched out to 40 pitches Saturday. At this point, it's unclear if the 41-year-old will require a minor-league rehab stint, and he shouldn't be expected back until the end of July or early August.

  • Astros' Kyle Tucker: On-field activities intensifying

Tucker (lower leg) participated in "intense defensive drills" Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Tucker resumed baseball activities this week that have progressed from light to intense. Saturday's update indicates that Tucker could be ready for a rehab assignment in the near future, an expected step in his recovery considering he's been shelved since early June.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Sitting again Saturday

Dubon is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mariners, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chroniclereports.

Dubon entered the All-Star break hitless in his last 10-at bats and has been on the bench in back-to-back games to open up the second half of the season. Once again, Joey Loperfido, Jake Meyers and Trey Cabbage will fill the outfield from left to right.

  • Astros' Josh Hader: Secures save Friday

Hader struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-0 win over the Mariners.

Hader got through the middle of the Mariners' order on a tidy 11 pitches (seven strikes) to earn his 19th save of the campaign. This was his fourth straight scoreless outing, an improvement on a stretch in which he allowed a run in four of six appearances from June 25 to July 7. The closer is at a 3.77 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 68:12 K:BB through 43 innings this season.

  • Astros' Hunter Brown: Throws six shutout innings

Brown (8-6) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five over six shutout innings to earn the win over the Mariners on Friday.

Brown walked multiple batters for the fourth time in five starts, but his only loss in that span came the one time he issued a single free pass. He's kept opponents off the board in five of his last eight outings and has record a quality start in 10 of his last 11 trip to the mound. Brown's walk rate is about the only issue for him at this point -- he has a 3.5 BB/9 overall, though since May 22 he has a 2.7 mark. The 25-year-old has added a 4.14 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 110:41 K:BB through 104.1 innings across 20 appearances (19 starts). Brown is projected to face the Athletics in a road start next week.

  • Astros' Lance McCullers: No structural damage in elbow

McCullers said Friday that he has no structural damage in his right elbow or forearm, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Despite that assurance, McCullers still has not resumed throwing after being shut down July 9. However, manager Joe Espada said the right-hander may be able to restart a throwing program within the next several days depending on how he feels. McCullers hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2022 and still figures to be at least several weeks away from a potential return to the Astros.

  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Throwing bullpen Saturday

Garcia (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Saturday will mark Garcia's first time throwing off a mound since July 4, as the Astros opted to pull him off his rehab assignment following a rough outing in Double-A. He will likely need to throw a few additional mound sessions before resuming his rehab stint, at which point he'll require multiple starts as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Not in Friday's lineup

Dubon isn't in the Astros' lineup for Friday's game against Seattle, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

After ending the first half of the season on an 0-for-10 streak, Dubon will take a seat for Houston's first game out of the All-Star break. While he rests, Joey Loperfido, Jake Meyers and Trey Cabbage will start across the Astros' outfield.

  • Astros' Victor Caratini: Rehab moved to Double-A

Caratini (hip) will continue his minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Caratini went 2-for-5 in two games with the Astros' Florida Complex League affiliate. The catcher has been on the shelf since June 21 and was initially given a three-to-four week timetable for his return. Caratini is on track to rejoin the Astros before the end of July.

  • Astros' Penn Murfee: Throwing full bullpen sessions

Murfee (elbow) resumed throwing full bullpen sessions June 21, MLB.com reports.

Murfee had previously been limited to throwing off the slope of the mound, but he's since taken a step forward in his recovery from last July's Tommy John surgery. He had been limited to throwing fastballs during his initial bullpen sessions, but it's possible he's been able to incorporate more breaking pitches in the month since being cleared for mound work. Murfee could be cleared to face hitters shortly after the All-Star break and could return from the 60-day injured list later in the second half.

  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Will resume mound work soon

Astros general manager Dana Brown said in an interview Thursday on "The Sean Salisbury Show" that Garcia (elbow) will resume throwing off the mound in a couple days, Michael Schwab of The Juice Box Journal reports.

Garcia was pulled off his rehab assignment after not responding well during his most recent rehab start July 4, but he was never shut down from throwing and is almost ready to get back on the bump. The right-hander is making his way back from Tommy John surgery, and once he's cleared to resume his rehab assignment, he'll likely need multiple starts in the minors before becoming an option for the Astros rotation.

  • Astros' Kyle Tucker: Still no timetable for return

Astros general manager Dana Brown said in an interview Thursday on "The Sean Salisbury Show" that Tucker (shin) remains without a timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, Michael Schwab of The Juice Box Journal reports.

Brown added that Tucker is doing some light on-field baseball activities and will require a rehab assignment before being activated. Tucker has been sidelined since early June with a right shin contusion.

  • Astros' Chris Gittens: Returns from IL

Gittens (knee) has gone 5-for-14 with a walk, an RBI and a run in four games for Triple-A Sugar Land since being reinstated the 7-day injured list last Thursday.

Gittens had been sidelined all season at Triple-A after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee early in spring training and requiring surgery. The 30-year-old doesn't possess a spot on Houston's 40-man roster and will face an uphill battle to make it back to the majors, where he last appeared in 2021 as a member of the Yankees.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Shifts back to bullpen

Dubin has made his last three appearances out of the Houston bullpen, striking out three while allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk across 2.2 innings.

Dubin made 3.1- and 2.2-inning starts on June 30 and July 5, respectively, but he was moved back to the bullpen after the Astros got Jake Bloss back from the injured list shortly before the All-Star break to fill out the final spot in their rotation. Though he notched a three-inning save May 16, Dubin has otherwise operated in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen this season, as he hasn't recorded any holds over his 17 relief appearances.

  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Pulled off rehab assignment

The Astros pulled Garcia (elbow) off his minor-league rehab assignment this week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Making his way back from May 2023 Tommy John surgery, Garcia made his first rehab start June 28 in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and his second July 4 with Double-A Corpus Christi. He didn't bounce back well from his start with Corpus Christi and hadn't throw a bullpen session since the outing, with the Astros having limited him to playing catch. While Garcia doesn't seem to be dealing with a major setback, he'll have to restart a 30-day rehab window once the team feels he's ready for game action. Clearly, a return from the 60-day injured list won't be in the forecast anytime soon for Garcia.
