  • Guardians' Will Brennan: On bench Saturday

Brennan is not in the starting lineup Saturday against San Diego.

Brennan will take a seat after he went 0-for-2 in Friday's 7-0 victory. Angel Martinez will slide over to right field while Tyler Freeman enters the lineup in center and bats eighth versus the Padres.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Sitting again Saturday

Rocchio is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Padres.

Rocchio will stay on the bench for a second game in a row following the All-Star break. Daniel Schneemann will draw another start at shortstop, batting seventh against San Diego.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Earns 20th hold

Gaddis allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn a hold in Friday's 7-0 win over the Padres.

Gaddis pitched in the eighth inning and protected a one-run lead before the Guardians' offense erupted. This was Gaddis' 20th hold of the season, and he's earned eight of them during a 17-inning scoreless streak dating back to June 7. The right-hander has been a pleasant surprise in his first full year in the bullpen, pitching to a 1.17 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 44:7 K:BB while adding a 3-2 record in a setup role.

  • Guardians' David Fry: On base four times in win

Fry went 3-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 7-0 win over the Padres.

Fry went just 3-for-30 over the first 11 games of July before matching that hit total in the first game back after his appearance in the All-Star Game. He was beginning to lose playing time due to the slump, with utility man Daniel Schneemann picking up most of the slack, but the Guardians' lineup remains fairly flexible with multiple utility players. Fry is slashing .290/.398/.473 with eight home runs, 34 RBI, 31 runs scored and four stolen bases over 74 contests, and he'll be out to prove his hot first half was not a fluke.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Swipes sixth bag

Kwan went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 7-0 win over the Padres.

MLB's batting average leader at .354 -- 26 points ahead of second-place Bobby Witt -- Kwan came flying out of the All-Star break with his first multi-hit performance since July 9. The 26-year-old outfielder only has six steals in 10 attempts this season, a disappointing showing after he went 21-for-24 on the basepaths in 2023, but he has successfully swiped bags in back-to-back games and could make an impact in the category in the second half.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Blanks Friars for eighth win

Bibee (8-4) picked up the win Friday, scattering two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a 7-0 victory over the Padres. He struck out three.

San Diego didn't get a runner past second base against Bibee, who got the hook after 102 pitches (67 strikes) just short of his eighth quality start of the season. While this was an encouraging outing after the right-hander gave up eight runs in 11.2 innings over his last two starts before the All-Star break, Bibee has issued multiple walks in three straight trips to the mound, something he hadn't done since April. He'll take a 3.58 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 126:30 K:BB through 110.2 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Tigers.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: On bench Friday

Rocchio is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.

Rocchio sat out two of the Guardians' final three games leading up to the All-Star break and will remain out of the starting lineup Friday. The 23-year-old is 0-for-12 in his last four starts. Daniel Schneemann will bat seventh and play shortstop.

  • Guardians' Travis Bazzana: Receives $8.95 million bonus

The Guardians signed Bazzana on Friday, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.

The first overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Bazzana has agreed to a signing bonus of $8.95 million, which is below the $9.25 million No. 2 overall pick Chase Burns received and well under the assigned $10.57 million slot value for the top pick. Bazzana is a lefty-hitting second baseman who could move through the Guardians' minor-league system quickly.

  • Guardians' Matthew Boyd: Ready for rehab assignment

Boyd (elbow) began a rehab assignment Tuesday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, covering three innings and striking out seven while allowing an unearned run on three hits and one walk.

Boyd signed a one-year contract with the Guardians last month and was immediately placed on the 15-day injured list as he continues to work his way back from June 2023 Tommy John surgery. The veteran southpaw will probably need most, if not all, of his allotted 30-day rehab window to get stretched back out, putting him on track for activation around mid-August if all goes well.

  • Guardians' Aidan Major: Selected by Guardians in Round 5

The Guardians have selected Major with the 146th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Major stands at only 5-foot-11, though he can still pump his fastball up to 96 mph. He complements his heater with a slider, cutter and changeup, all of which can generate whiffs. Major's size is a concern, particularly because he's recovering from surgery to repair his UCL that he underwent this spring.

  • Guardians' Rafe Schlesinger: Plucked by Cleveland

The Guardians have selected Schlesinger with the 113th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The southpaw pitched out of the bullpen for most of his career at the University of Miami, but Schlesinger showed some intriguing assets as a starter in 2024. His fastball ticked up and topped out at 97 mph, his slider would occasionally flash plus, and he showed a good feel for his changeup. Erratic mechanics and a low arm slot profile him as a likely reliever as a pro, but if the Guardians can help him refine his delivery and make it more consistent, he could prove to be a steal in the fourth round.
