  • Reds' Will Benson: Not starting against southpaw

Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals.

Lefty MacKenzie Gore will toe the slab for the Nats, so the lefty-hitting Benson will step out of the lineup while Austin Slater covers center field and bats sixth.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Sitting down versus lefty

Fraley isn't in the Reds' lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals.

Fraley will start Saturday's game on the bench with left-hander MacKenzie Gore set to start on the bump for Washington. Spencer Steer, Austin Slater and Rece Hinds will start across the outfield while Fraley rests.

  • Reds' Casey Legumina: Recalled from Louisville

The Reds recalled Legumina from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

Legumina allowed two earned runs in two innings during his lone MLB appearance April 22, though he has fared much better in Triple-A since then, posting a 2.78 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 32.1 innings. He'll now return to the big leagues as bullpen depth to make up for the loss of Brent Suter (shoulder).

  • Reds' Brent Suter: Lands on injured list

The Reds placed Suter on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a partial tear of his left teres major muscle.

Suter's shoulder forced him to make an early exit from Friday's contest after just seven pitches, and he'll now be held out through the beginning of August at least. Casey Legumina was recalled from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Austin Slater: Starts against lefty

Slater started in left field and went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 8-5 loss to the Nationals.

Slater made his third start since joining the Reds -- all against opposing lefties -- and delivered his first two runs in a Cincinnati uniform. He's 2-for-13 since being acquired from San Francisco. Once TJ Friedl (hamstring) returns from the injured list, the outfield picture will become crowded. The lefty-hitting Friedl typically starts against pitchers of either handedness, so Slater will compete with Stuart Fairchild and Rece Hinds for at-bats.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: RBI, steal in win

India went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI in Friday's 8-5 loss to Washington.

India singled in the Reds' first run then stole a bag in the third inning. The steal was his ninth of the season. India once again batted atop the order, as normal leadoff hitter TJ Friedl (hamstring) remains on the injured list. Friedl could return next week. Eventually, when second baseman Matt McLain (shoulder) is ready to return, Cincinnati manager David Bell will likely need to find a home for India's bat.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Gets start Friday

Fairchild started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 8-5 loss to the Nationals.

Fairchild, who put himself in scoring position with a single and a steal, scored the Reds' first run. The theft was his career-high 12th stolen base. Fairchild was activated off the 10-day injured list earlier in the day and was available against Washington left-hander Patrick Corbin. He was an automatic starter against left-handers prior to his injury, but Cincinnati has since added Austin Slater and promoted Rece Hinds, which crowds the outfield's right-handed-hitting options against southpaws. Eventually, TJ Friedl (hamstring) will rejoin the team, perhaps next week, and Fairchild could get further squeezed for at-bats.

  • Reds' Frankie Montas: Tagged for seven runs

Montas (4-8) took the loss Friday against the Nationals, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

After blanking the Nats through his first three innings, Montas was tagged for four runs in the fourth before giving up a three-run homer to Juan Yepez in the fifth. The 31-year-old Montas has been plagued by the long ball recently -- he's now allowed two homers in each of his last three outings. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.85 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 72:38 K:BB across 18 starts (89 innings) this season. Montas is currently slated for a tough road matchup versus Atlanta in his next outing.

  • Reds' Brent Suter: Exits with injury

Suter was removed from Friday's game against the Nationals due to left shoulder tightness, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Suter was only able to get through two-thirds of an inning on seven pitches before exiting alongside a trainer. The 34-year-old southpaw may be unavailable for at least a game or two while the Reds determine the severity of the issue.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Not facing lefty

Benson is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals.

Benson will yield to Stuart Fairchild in center field Friday due to southpaw Patrick Corbin starting for Washington. Benson is slashing .190/.277/657 with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases in 293 plate appearances this season.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Absent from starting nine

Fraley is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals.

With left-hander Patrick Corbin on the bump for Washington, the lefty-hitting Fraley will take a seat. In his place, Austin Slater will bat sixth and play left field.

  • Reds' Edwin Rios: Removed from 40-man roster

The Reds designated Rios for assignment Friday.

Rios had his contract selected July 5 but logged only 10 plate appearances and went 1-for-9 with four strikeouts. He'll vacate his spot on the active roster for Stuart Fairchild (back). If Rios clears waivers, he'll likely remain with the Reds' organization.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Activated from IL

The Reds reinstated Fairchild (back) from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Fairchild had been eyeing a return after the All-Star break, and he'll hit that goal by being available for Cincinnati's series opener against the Nationals on Friday. The outfielder has been shelved since July 7 with a disc injury. Before the injury, the 28-year-old had been seeing regular work in center field in place of TJ Friedl (hamstring), but with Friedl likely back next week and both Rece Hinds and Austin Slater added to the mix since Fairchild landed on the IL, he may be limited to a short-side platoon role. Edwin Rios was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Ty Floyd: Recovering from shoulder surgery

Floyd had shoulder surgery and won't pitch again until 2025, Carlos Collazo of Baseball America reports.

It's not clear exactly when Floyd had the procedure, but he opened the year on the injured list with right elbow discomfort and never pitched before needing shoulder surgery. Depending on the severity of the procedure, Floyd may not be ready for the start of the 2025 campaign. He still hasn't made his pro debut after the Reds selected him with the 38th overall pick in the 2023 draft.

  • Reds' Alfredo Duno: Recovering from broken rib

Duno is on the 7-day injured list at Single-A Daytona with a broken rib, Carlos Collazo of Baseball America reports.

Per the report, Duno is rehabbing at the Reds' spring training complex and could return very late in the season. The 18-year-old catcher jumped over the Arizona Complex League and went straight from the Dominican Summer League to Single-A this season. He slashed .267/.367/.422 with three home runs and a 28.8 percent strikeout rate in 32 games before suffering the injury.

  • Reds' Chase Burns: Gets record signing bonus

Burns agreed to a contract with the Reds on Thursday that includes a $9.25 million signing bonus, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Burns, the second overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, will receive a signing bonus of $9.25 million, topping the record $9.2 million that Paul Skenes received from the Pirates in 2023. Burns was named the ACC's Pitcher of the Year in 2024 after going 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts while leading all of college baseball with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings. He's set to begin his professional career Monday, when he reports to Cincinnati's training facility in Goodyear, Ariz.
