While many parts of central and western Massachusetts are not included in the advisory, it's important to proceed with caution, as heat index values in the mid-to-upper 90s will still be possible outside of the advisory area.

Heat index

Triple digit heat indices are also possible both Monday and Tuesday afternoon across southern New England. Monday will feature drier air with more sunshine.

Air temperatures outside of shaded areas will be much hotter than the thermometer readings. So make sure to limit exposure to the outdoors in the first part of the week.

Excessive heat warning

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Check on your neighbors, drink plenty of fluids, and take breaks from the outdoors. Your best bet is to avoid the sun from at least 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You should also be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat stroke comes from an abnormally elevated body temperature. The symptoms to look out for include a high body temperature, a throbbing headache, no sweating, red hot dry skin, a rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, and hallucinations, disorientation, agitation, seizure and/or coma.

If you see anyone going through this, call 911 immediately.

The key difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion is your skin. If it's hot, red and dry, it could be heat stroke.

If it's cold, pale and clammy, it may be heat exhaustion. in that case, get to an air conditioned room, drink water and take a cool shower if possible.

You should also check your pulse. If it's fast and weak, it's likely heat exhaustion. But if it's fast and strong, it might be heat stroke.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has much more on their website about what to watch for with heat-related illnesses.
