ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - Odessa Compass Academy hired Boe Smith to be the new head football coach and one of the athletic directors.

He was the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Legacy High, but took the head coaching job with Odessa Compass Academy. It was an important move for him that was made easier because his children attend the Compass Academy.

Smith takes over an Odessa Compass team that went 4-7 in 2023, but he likes what he sees and is optimistic about the team’s future.

“After sitting down and watching all the film, knowing Coach White personally– our kids played football together– so seeing him and talking to him during the season and seeing and hearing how close he felt they were, you know, I feel the same way. That 4-7 could have easily been, in my opinion, a lot better of a record for them,” Smith said.

Smith came to Compass Academy and bolstered the coaching staff for the entire school. The athletics program has gone from just two coaches across all sports to eight.

In addition to teaching his athletes to be good people, he also wants to instill a hard-working mindset.

“The biggest thing was just be here to work, you know, bring a hardhat mentality, work every day, know what you’re planning for and know what you’re pushing for every day,” Smith said.

Boe Smith will make his head coaching debut against Sterling City on August 30.
