CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - The West Plains Lady Wolves softball team has named a new head coach.

Canyon ISD Director of Athletics John Peterson announced this afternoon that Lexi Velasquez will take over the position next school year.

Velasquez played softball in college at Texas A&M - Commerce.

The Amarillo native played high school softball at river road where she was a four-time all-district MVP and four-time all-state honorable mention.

For the last three years, she’s served an assistant coach with the Amarillo High Lady Sandies softball team that has won three straight district titles.

“My goal for the program at West Plains High School is to increase performance at a high level while keeping players’ health and longevity as a top priority.” Velasquez said. “I intend to build mentally tough and competitive young women with a desire to achieve success at a high level and develop skills that they can use past their athletic careers.”

Velasquez is the third coach in the three-year history of the program at West Plains.
