ODESSA/MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -This Saturday Mary Kate Hamilton and Jay Hendricks will be helping out Meals on Wheels of Odessa and Senior Life Midland with the summer fan drive event.

Both organizations need fans to help their inbound seniors stay cool this summer.

With the summer weather heating up Meals on Wheels of Odessa is aiming to raise three hundred fans and senior life in midland is aiming to raise one hundred fifty fans.

Both organizations want to make sure their homebound seniors are comfortable at home this summer.

Meals on Wheels of Odessa and Senior Life in Midland have been receiving phone calls from their clients about needing fans.

Then a survey was conducted and found there was a huge need for fans.

“So, we already had a hundred fifty on our list who needed an instrument to cool their home up. We have already been collecting fans and we have already been passing them out. We know the event is coming up this Saturday, but we don’t want our folks to wait.” said Executive Director Craig Stoker.

The seniors inbound without an A/C, or a fan are at higher risk of a heat stroke.

“With our older folks, their bodies don’t cool off like they used to. They are on medications that prevent sweating those things that our body naturally does. So, we want to be mindful of that and we want to make sure we are keeping an eye on those folks.” said Craig Stoker.

Senior Life in Midland distributes between one hundred to one hundred fifty fans every summer.

Most senior inbound clients don’t have the resources to cool down in part because of the rise of inflation.

“The rising cost of electricity is a struggle many times for our seniors to be able to choose to pay for their medication or keep the lights on or to buy food. So, with this fan drive it’s one more way to relieve some stress.” said Director of Development Senior Life in Midland Tracy Renton.

Senior Life in Midland and Meals on Wheels of Odessa are hoping to have support from the community to help out the seniors inbound.

“Through our fan drive it is so vital that the community come together to see this need as being lifesaving and be willing to help,” said Tracy Renton.

You can donate a fan to Senior Life in Midland and Meals on Wheels of Odessa this Saturday from nine to twelve.
