Arrest made in fatal Midland hit-and-run

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) - Midland Police have arrested a 36-year-old Midland man for his role in a vehicle collision with a pedestrian on May 27, 2024, on Florida Avenue.

Police reported Friday, June 7, 2024, that Danny Paul Rodriguez was arrested without incident for an “accident involving death and accident involving serious bodily injury.”

One of the two 20-year-old pedestrians involved in the collision – Sergio Alejandro Regino Valdez – died, succumbing to injuries sustained in this collision, according to MPD. Following Valdez’s death, Midland Police obtained arrest warrants for Rodriguez.

On May 27, MPD reported several subjects outside La Cantina (200 E. Florida Ave.) engaged in a physical altercation on the northeast corner of the parking lot. The altercation at around 1:50 a.m. migrated into the eastbound lanes of the 200 block of East Florida.

Two pedestrians were in the outside lane and struck by a midsize maroon Cadillac SUV, police reported.

“The SUV was traveling eastbound and appeared to be in both lanes of travel,” according to MPD reports. “The driver of the SUV never slowed for the subjects. A witness advised the SUV turned north after the collision occurred. The driver of the SUV fled the scene.”
